A \u2018distinctive\u2019 series <\/a>about a diplomat hunting down a team of treasure hunters to recover their spoils is now streaming for free in the UK.<\/p>\n

First hitting screens in 2021, La Fortuna is a Spanish-American adventure drama television miniseries.<\/p>\n

Directed by Alejandro Amen\u00e1bar, the series marked the acclaimed filmmakers first foray into small screen productions.<\/p>\n

Based on the 2018 graphic novel El tesoro del Cisne Negro by Paco Roca and Guillermo Corral, the six-parter, which is now on ITVX in the UK, was also based on an incredible true story<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In 1804 the Spanish ship Nuestra Senora de las Mercedes was sunk by the British Navy off the south coast of Portugal during the Battle of Cap Santa Maria.<\/p>\n

Over two centuries later, in 2007, the Florida-based company Odysseus Marine Exploration reported having discovered a shipwreck<\/a>, later revealed to be the Senora.<\/p>\n

gold coins from the wreck before transporting them to the United States.<\/p>\n<p>But soon after the Spanish government kickstarted a legal battle over what it considered to be illegal looting, with the coins estimated to be worth around $500,000 (\u00a3368,000).<\/p>\n<p>In the TV show, the story focuses on Alex Ventura (\u00c1lvaro Mel), a young diplomat who ends up spearheading efforts to recover the underwater shipwreck of La Fortuna, seized off the coast of Gibraltar by Frank Wild (<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/stanley-tucci\/\">Stanley Tucci<\/a>), a treasure hunter.<\/p>\n<p>It was teased of the show: \u2018La Fortuna was known to be carrying gold gathered all over South America to fund the Spanish war effort. Wild and his crew claim to have found it by chance. Now the Spanish government wants it back.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The series also stars Ana Polvorosa as Luc\u00eda Vallarta, a civil servant and T’Nia Miller as Susan McLean, a lawyer collaborating with Frank.<\/p>\n<p>At the time reviews of the series were mixed from critics and viewers, but many did share they were drawn in by the unique premise.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018There is no puzzle to solve in La Fortuna, no hidden messages, and that relative straightforwardness coupled with the actors’ clinic put on by Tucci and Peters is enough to make La Fortuna worth retrieving from the depths of streaming,\u2019 Vulture wrote in its review.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nichesitetool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/SEI_255744612-f744.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23426705\" alt=\"Ana Polvorosa and Alvaro Mel. La Fortuna (Picture: AMC)\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t<\/div><figcaption>The Spanish government puts together a team to go up against American treasure hunters (Picture: AMC)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"636\" height=\"358\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nichesitetool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/99413017-0-image-a-12_1750065964447.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23426078\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Stanley Tucci plays treasure hunter Frank Wild (Picture: AMC)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2018La Fortuna’s distinctive story, combined with the standout performances from Tucci and Peters, make the show one we want to stick with,\u2019 Decider shared.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It’s a very topical, hot-button issue that the series addresses, intelligently and not without acknowledging that its central controversy has two sides — even if director and co-writer Alejandro Amen\u00e1bar makes clear which side he’s on,\u2019 the Wall Street Journal added.<\/p>\n<p>Deadline explained the show as \u2018a strange, soupy hybrid of courtroom drama, Indiana Jones fantasies and an Iberian version of The Office\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile fans said it was a \u2018breath of fresh air worth binging\u2019, a \u2018masterpiece\u2019 and even \u2018the best Spanish series ever\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.empireonline.com\/tv\/features\/stanley-tucci-talks-la-fortuna-working-in-tv-and-the-fun-of-animation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Empire <\/a>in 2022, Stanley spoke about being drawn to his character, who is described in the first episode as a \u2018pirate\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>What drew you to your character in La Fortuna****, who is actually described in the first episode<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I mean, that’s what drew me to him, that he’s really complicated,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nichesitetool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/SEI_255744695-776c.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23426716\" alt=\"T'Nia Miller and Stanley Tucci.
