Doctor Who<\/a> has survived an awful lot.  <\/p>\n

We\u2019ve seen the Doctor <\/a>fall off a giant telescope, absorb a lethal amount of radiation (twice), and even bump their head on the Tardis console, yet they still walked away to tell the tale. <\/p>\n

True, they might not have had the same face after these incidents, but that\u2019s pretty run of the mill for Time Lords. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s strange, then, that for the first time since 2005 and Doctor Who\u2019s triumphant return that it feels like the beloved sci-fi series is in peril<\/a>.  <\/p>\n

Low viewing figures, mixed critical reception, and growing fan antipathy have dogged the show over the last few series, and there\u2019s a fear amongst fans that the Doctor might be done for.  <\/p>\n

Yet, do you know who else has believed the Doctor was defeated over the years? The Daleks… and the Cybermen\u2026 and The Master.  <\/p>\n

In fact, countless villains over the years have considered the Doctor to be beaten, only to be proven wrong, and new rumours have me optimistic that the Last of the Time Lords can do the impossible once again.  <\/p>\n

We\u2019ll start with the bad news. There are unverified reports online that Disney is done with Doctor Who and that they won\u2019t be helping produce another season.   <\/p>\n

On paper, that sounds like a massive blow, but before you start wailing into your Tom Baker scarf<\/a>, there is some good news.<\/p>\n

Who knows?\u00a0(Picture: CREDIT LINE:BBC Studios\/Bad Wolf\/James Pardon)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The BBC may have grand ambitions for Doctor Who to be a big-budget affair like the MCU or other modern sci-fi series, but that\u2019s not what audiences watch the show for. <\/p>\n<p>They watch it because they love the characters, the stories, and the incredible creativity of the writers.  <\/p>\n<p>The House of Mouse\u2019s cash might have allowed the Doctor to go on bigger adventures than ever before through impressive special effects, incredible sets, <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2021\/11\/01\/doctor-who-series-13-fans-hit-out-at-shows-special-effects-in-ep-1-15519294\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2021\/11\/01\/doctor-who-series-13-fans-hit-out-at-shows-special-effects-in-ep-1-15519294\/\">and stunning CGI<\/a>, but it also robbed the show of some of its underdog spirit.  <\/p>\n<p>Now, the stereotype of every Doctor Who monster being made of a pedal bin with bubble wrap glued to it is a bit outdated, as is the belief that it\u2019s filmed exclusively in Welsh quarries. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nichesitetool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/PM_12597885-e411.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23296876\" alt=\"David Tennant as the tenth time lord Doctor Who and Billie Piper as Rose Tyler,\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t<\/div><figcaption>I think the limited budgets pushed writers and producers to think their way out of problems (Picture: PA)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Yet it is true that the series’ limited budget forced the show\u2019s writers and producers to get creative, which gave Doctor Who a certain charm all of its own.  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2017\/03\/07\/doctor-who-as-the-original-cybermen-return-here-are-10-other-classic-monsters-that-are-due-a-revival-6493062\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2017\/03\/07\/doctor-who-as-the-original-cybermen-return-here-are-10-other-classic-monsters-that-are-due-a-revival-6493062\/\">Monsters felt more real<\/a> because they were just people in goofy costumes, not CGI behemoths.  <\/p>\n<p>Alien worlds felt tangible because they weren\u2019t green screens, they were\u2026 well, to be honest, they were Welsh quarries, but they used other places in Wales too! <\/p>\n<p>More than that, I think the limited budgets pushed writers and producers to think their way out of problems, rather than throwing cash at them.  <\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"486\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nichesitetool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/PM_9992454-f619-e1749566972756.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22949667\" alt=\"Telvision programme DR WHO (CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON). No, it\u2019s not because the chameleon circuit is broken. It\u2019s because the BBC didn\u2019t want to pay for a new prop every week.   <\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s right, one of the most important pieces of iconography in British pop culture was born because some backroom accountant wanted to save a couple of quid.  <\/p>\n<section class=\"metro-comment-cta\">\n<div class=\"metro-comment-cta__inner\"><span class=\"metro-comment-cta__text-wrap\"><title>Comment now<\/title><span class=\"metro-comment-cta__text\">Are you optimistic about the next Doctor? Have your say in the comments below<\/span><\/span><a class=\"metro-comment-cta__button\" href=\"#metro-comments-container\">Comment Now<\/a><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>Glibness aside, I do think a big problem in recent years has been an overreliance on spectacle over character and plot (most notably in the last two season finales).  <\/p>\n<p>With that in mind then I\u2019m hopeful that whoever takes on Who will make Russell T Davies and his writers realise expensive CGI isn\u2019t a substitute for a coherent story.  <\/p>\n<p>So, what I\u2019m saying is that Disney dropping Doctor Who may wound the show.
