Warning: spoilers ahead for The Last of Us season 2 episode 1.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Last of Us season 2<\/a> may have only just begun but fans are convinced they\u2019ve already worked out a major twist.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The first new episode of the wildly popular zombie show opens five years after the events of the season 1 finale<\/a>, with Ellie (Bella Ramsey<\/a>) and Joel (Pedro Pascal<\/a>) living in the remote (but infection-free) mountain town of Jackson.  <\/p>\n

Sadly, while Joel might be safe from zombie bites<\/a>, he\u2019s facing a far worse danger: an angry teenager and Ellie is barely talking to him as the episode begins. <\/p>\n

Things are only made worse when, at the end of the episode, Joel knocks out a homophobic man for abusing Ellie, prompting the embarrassed teenager to tell her dear old foster dad that she doesn\u2019t need him to protect her. <\/p>\n

However, it\u2019s the end of the episode that really broke fan’s hearts.  <\/p>\n

As Ellie returns home, she sees Joel sitting on their house’s porch, strumming on her previously broken guitar. Unlike in the game, though \u2013 where Ellie joins Joel for an important conversation \u2013 she walks by, seemingly unwilling to forgive Joel for whatever it is he\u2019s done.  <\/p>\n

You see one eagle-eyed fan is convinced showrunner (and the episode 1 writer) Craig Mazin has hidden a whopping great big twist in plain sight, and they make a pretty convincing argument.  <\/p>\n<p>@neogalaxite wrote on X: \u2018At the end of the season they\u2019re gonna cut back to the porch scene and show that Ellie actually turned around and talked to Joel about trying to forgive him WATCH THIS SPACE.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>A number of fans are now convinced this is exactly how the season will play out. \u2018100% that\u2019s gonna happen,\u2019 @TheFreshTrumpet replied. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018They\u2019re trying to throw off game fans with that one lol that scene was so impactful with how it was presented in the game, I think they\u2019ve set themselves up beautifully to do the same here.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>\u2018EXACTLY THIS OMGOMG (sic) I had the same thought,\u2019 added @saphkiramman. It’s a real gut puncher after everything that goes on in the story.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>Of course, it is possible (as distressing as it is to admit) that things played out just how we saw, and Ellie didn\u2019t stop to speak to Joel. It wouldn\u2019t be the first time that Mazin has played with the game\u2019s story.  <\/p>\n<p>The 54-year-old changed <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/08\/29\/the-last-of-us-episode-3-bill-frank-tv-show-death-date-19414805\/\">Bill\u2019s<\/a> (Nick Offerman) story to <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/01\/24\/could-the-last-of-us-actually-happen-science-behind-cordyceps-fungus-18159766\/\">huge critical acclaim<\/a> during the first season, and it\u2019s well within his power to do the same again as he told <strong>Metro <\/strong>at The Last of Us season two premiere in London. <\/p>\n<div class=\"factbox\" data-ico=\"factbox_article\" data-track-module=\"factbox_article\">\n<h2 class=\"factbox-title\">\n\t\t\t\tMetro's review of The Last of Us season 2\t\t\t<\/h2>\n<div class=\"factbox-content\">\n<p>If you thought the first season of The Last of Us was traumatising, just wait for season 2 to rip your heart out and shatter it into a million pieces yet again.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Metro<\/strong>\u2018s Deputy TV Editor Sabrina Barr <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/04\/07\/feared-last-us-season-2-wouldnt-match-legacy-22864098\/\">reviewed the new season<\/a>, giving it four out of five stars after watching all seven episodes.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Whether or not you\u2019re aware of spoilers for the story, it should come as no surprise that there\u2019s going to be heartbreak and devastation aplenty. So strap yourselves in,\u2019 the review read.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Just like in the first season, Joel and Ellie\u2019s relationship forms the backbone of season two. Following Joel\u2019s demolition of the Fireflies, many viewers suspected that Ellie guessed that her father figure might have lied to her about her rescue and how the rebel group were killed.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Even though five years have passed, his lies have not disappeared into the ether. They torment his mind, adding to the friction that\u2019s inevitably built between him and Ellie as she yearns for more independence as a young adult.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Yet again, The Last Of Us makes its viewers take a good hard look at themselves to ask some of the hardest questions imaginable \u2013 if someone you loved was going to be killed to save millions of others, would you let them die or save them?<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Could you accept their death knowing that other people\u2019s lives were saved as a result, or could you not bear to let them perish, regardless of the consequences?<\/p>\n<p>\u2018That question brings a level of humanity to The Last Of Us that\u2019s extraordinarily difficult to achieve on TV, especially in a story that\u2019s set in a post-apocalyptic landscape, with zombie-like creatures whose sole purpose is to spread their infection as far as possible.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The review concludes: \u2018The Last Of Us had a mighty task on its hands to live up to its first season. changes we made, because that would give a lot of things away. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018But what I can say is that we followed the same process that we did in season one, which is to think about what the game does beautifully that we know, as a fan, I need it to be the same, and then there are things that the game does that are so connected to the gameplay that we don\u2019t really have the ability to do in television, so we\u2019ve made changes.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>Quite what those changes are we\u2019ll have to wait and see, but we can expect them to have major repercussions over the course of the next six episodes and into <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/04\/13\/last-us-season-2-release-date-watch-everything-know-22901165\/\">season three<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p>\u2018I think it\u2019s important for fans to know that everything that\u2019s happening now in season two is almost like\u2026 it\u2019s like a little seed that\u2019s going to blossom into this very scary fungal nightmare in season three\u2019 Mazin told Metro when we asked about the third season. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018But all questions will be answered, all mysteries will be solved.
