Disney<\/a>\u2019s headline-grabbing Snow White has failed to live up to box office estimates, coming in at $43<\/strong>million (\u00a332.5m)\u00a0domestically and $87<\/strong>.3m (\u00a367.5m)\u00a0globally.<\/p>\n

Expectations were in line with the live-action remake<\/a> instead managing $45m (\u00a334.8m) in the US and $100m (\u00a377.3m) worldwide in its opening weekend, which were cautious predictions themselves.<\/p>\n

However, Snow White has clearly not cast the spell over moviegoers that Disney would like according to Deadline<\/a>, coming in below even the 2019 flop Dumbo’s opening weekend, which managed $46m (\u00a335.6m).<\/p>\n

For context, The Little Mermaid<\/a> took $95.5m (\u00a373.9m) during its first weekend in 2023.<\/p>\n

Snow White is faring far better than new Robert De Niro release The Alto Knights<\/a> though, which managed just $3m (\u00a32.3m) on opening weekend and sixth place at the box office – but its $50m (\u00a338.7m) budget makes this less of an issue when Snow White has a price tag of roughly $250m (\u00a3193.5m) before any publicity.<\/p>\n

Having said this, the numbers are better than 2024’s notorious box office stinker<\/a> Joker: Folie \u00e0 Deux, which only managed $37.6m (\u00a329.1m) to begin with on a similar mega-budget, while Disney’s hit last year, Mufasa, only scraped in $35m (\u00a327m) domestically to begin with – before claiming a comeback with a much more comfortable $717m (\u00a3554.9m) worldwide.<\/p>\n

href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/rotten-tomatoes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rotten Tomatoes<\/a> with an underwhelming rating of 48% after mixed-to-negative reactions from critics, from 96 reviews.<\/p>\n<p>With 181 reviews now counting at time of publication on Sunday, it’s sunk further to 44%, although the audience score is a lot higher at 74% with over 1,000 verified audience reactions.<\/p>\n<section class=\"metro-comment-cta\">\n<div class=\"metro-comment-cta__inner\"><span class=\"metro-comment-cta__text-wrap\"><title>Comment now<\/title><span Now<\/a><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>Snow White is Disney’s latest reimagining \u2013 as the studio terms it \u2013 in a long line of remakes over the last decade, from The Jungle Book to <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/aladdin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Aladdin<\/a> and Cinderella.<\/p>\n<p>This one sees Disney tackle its first-ever feature-length animation from 1937, starring <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/rachel-zegler\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rachel Zegler<\/a> in the titular role.<\/p>\n<p>But <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/17\/surprising-reactions-disneys-controversial-snow-white-remake-first-reviews-22738208\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">despite initial promising reactions<\/a> on social media <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/15\/earth-going-frenzied-woke-backlash-disneys-snow-white-22717294\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">after a rocky road to release<\/a>, many official critics\u2019 reviews appear to consider the film closer to a poisoned apple than the fairest of them all.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"284\" Instead, this dopey remake made me sleepy and grumpy,\u2019 quipped Odie Henderson for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2025\/03\/19\/arts\/disney-snow-white-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Boston Globe<\/a>, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2025\/mar\/19\/snow-white-review-live-action-musical-rachel-zegler-gal-gadot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Guardian<\/a>\u2019s Peter Bradshaw called it an \u2018exhaustingly awful reboot\u2019 and added in a one-star review: \u2018This feels like a very hard day\u2019s work in the IP diamond mine.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/films\/reviews\/disney-snow-white-review-rachel-zegler-b2718382.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Independent<\/a>\u2019s Clarisse Loughrey was equally unimpressed by the ‘visually repellant’ film, penning: \u2018With Snow White, they\u2019ve finessed their formula \u2013 do the bare minimum to make a film, then simply slap a bunch of cutesy CGI animals all over it and hope no one notices.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018There\u2019s nothing magical in Marc Webb\u2019s movie, but it nevertheless feels uncanny; spending $250million (\u00a3193.5m) to make a film in which absolutely nothing works is a kind of dark art in and of itself,\u2019 sniped the Toronto Star.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It represents a new low for cultural desecration and for a venerable 102-year-old entertainment company that now looks at its source material with a pinched nose of disgust,\u2019 added <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/culture\/film\/article\/snow-white-review-disney-has-trashed-its-crown-jewel-and-its-reputation-rflnjtn90\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Times<\/a>\u2019 Kevin Maher, while The Wrap observed: \u2018There\u2019s nothing wrong with Disney\u2019s live-action remake of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ that couldn\u2019t be fixed by making it 26 minutes shorter, 88 years ago and in hand-drawn animation.\u2019<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"502\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nichesitetool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/SEI_243569128-95e9-e1742466073899.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22717828\" alt=\"Editorial use only. Again, that doesn’t make the film a disaster. In some ways, the identity crisis is what makes it worth seeing,\u2019 wrote Nicholas Barber for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/culture\/article\/20250319-film-review-disneys-snow-white-has-a-major-identity-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the BBC<\/a>, also calling it \u2018undoubtedly the most fascinating\u2019 of Disney\u2019s remakes.<\/p>\n<p>Others had even more positive remarks, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/entertainment\/films\/2029443\/Snow-White-review-Disney-Rachel-Zegler-Gal-Gadot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daily Express<\/a> writing in a four-star reaction: \u2018Marc Webb\u2019s reimagining is a welcome surprise, full of enchantment and joyous new songs.\u2019<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"441\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nichesitetool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/SEI_243699775-d343-e1741992186325.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22731774\" alt=\"Andrew Burnap, Rachel Zegler as Snow White, 2025.\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Star Rachel Zegler (R) has been widely praised though, with many reviews landing in the middle for the movie (Picture: Walt Disney Co\/Everett\/Shutterstock)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2018A visually stunning, thematically rich adaptation that successfully modernises the classic tale. This is a fairy tale for a new generation \u2013 one that reminds us all of the power of courage, kindness, and believing in a better future,\u2019 shared <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heyuguys.com\/snow-white-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HeyUGuys<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I also <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/19\/disney-proves-woke-aint-broke-enchantingly-refreshed-snow-white-remake-22749710\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">praised Snow White in my review<\/a> for <strong>Metro<\/strong> as \u2018one of [Disney\u2019s] strongest and most worthwhile \u2018reimaginings\u2019 to date\u2019 and <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/19\/snow-white-actress-rachel-zegler-blasts-white-hollywood-executives-prove-identity-22756126\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">described Zegler<\/a> as \u2018an enchanting talent with a voice to match, [who] carefully avoids falling into twee territory as the original Disney princess\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018In terms of magic over media frenzy \u2013 the only metric that really matters when it comes to a family film after all \u2013 Disney\u2019s Snow White is up there alongside Cinderella and The Jungle Book in terms of quality and personality.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Disney live-action remakes do not historically have the highest ratings on Rotten Tomatoes among critics, although 2016’s treatment of The Jungle Book is on 94%; the Johnny Depp-starring Alice in Wonderland is on 50% while Maleficent has 54% and Mufasa: The Lion King only has 57%.<\/p>\n<p>Disney’s 2019 remake of The Lion King, which is the 11th highest-grossing film of all time with over $1.6billion (\u00a31.2bn) earned at the box office, is also on just 51%.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"289\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nichesitetool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/SEI_242726814-754a.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22678174\" alt=\"Lightened Snow White Stills\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Snow White is currently one of the lower-ranking reboots for Disney, although several of the most successful also have bad scores (Picture: Disney)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meanwhile, films including Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Dumbo are below Snow White in terms of scores, with Robert Zemeckis’ take on Pinocchio, led by Tom Hanks, right at the bottom on 27%.<\/p>\n<p>Snow White’s much stronger audience rating of 74% saw fans insist there’s ‘not a boring moment’, while another wrote: ‘A fun remake that adds much needed context to the largely lacking originals story.
