TVMany of the residents at the Hughenden Gardens Retirement Village -the eldest being 95 – thought there was a hard limit to what they could do.
But then a ground-breaking experiment with actress Rose Ayling-Ellis at the helm has changed everything for them.
Not only have the OAPs’ opinions of themselves rapidly shifted, but their recent experience has the potential to smash the general public’s stereotypes about what the elderly are capable of doing with ease.
This has all been achieved by doing one thing – learning British Sign Language (BSL).
The retirees were willing guinea pigs for an ambitious new scheme thought up by Rose, who has long believed that BSL has the power to positively improve the quality of life of the older population.
To test her theory, she started with Hughenden Gardens, with the plan to eventually make BSL lessons accessible for the ageing population. (Rose also wants other generations to pick it up, but that’s a whole other story).
Although it sounds like it could be a B plot in Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club series, the rationale behind it has merit. Currently, an estimated 75% of older people experience hearing loss, which is expected to increase to 80% by 2032.
However, hearing loss can be easily dismissed and go undiagnosed leading to further problems and barriers later in life, as when communicating becomes difficult it can lead to feelings of isolation.
According to Age UK, approximately one in five older adults (aged 65 and over) report feeling lonely, and isolation is one of the biggest killers in the UK — so it’s an issue that needs to be addressed.
One of the retirement village’s longest-standing residents Karen, 77, was an enthusiastic student during the process, which was documented by BBC in the playfully titled Rose Ayling-Ellis: Old Hands, New Tricks, but initially, she had her reservations. ‘How am I going to do this?’ was her first question.
‘It was daunting. Some of us might not look that old, but we are old,’ Karen tells Metro. ‘I’ve lost a lot of my knowledge and I didn’t think I was able to learn at all.’
She was quickly surprised though, by her brain’s ability to pick up a new skill under the guidance of BSL teacher Marios Costi and Rose. Not only did she enjoy learning the new langauage, but it also increased Karen’s confidence.
‘Learning sign language has given me another dimension. My son says it’s given me a new lease of life. I’m like a big kid at the moment,’ she says.
Widower Karen admits to previously putting on a positive ‘mask’ that hid what was truly going on behind the scenes. When her husband David died in 2015, a month before their 50th wedding anniversary, she understandably struggled to adapt without the love of her life. ‘I couldn’t get used to the fact that I hadn’t got anybody living with me anymore. When I was on my own, I cried a lot of tears. I felt very lonely,’ she explains.
So in 2018, aged 70, she made the move to Hughenden Gardens and tried to be ‘strong’.
There, Karen discovered that having things to do would make her feel better, so she took on the role as a bingo caller and helps write the village magazine. Learning sign language has also become another positive and welcome addition to her schedule.
‘I still have my moments, everybody in my position does, but you have to live life to the full, and I’m doing that now,’ she explains. ‘I talk to everyone because it makes me feel better and also I don’t want them to feel how I’ve felt. Now I can speak to people with hearing issues too.
‘If you don’t talk to people, you’ll never find anything out about them. I discovered things about the lives of people I’d known for a while – both good and bad – by learning sign. I’ve had a couple of residents who have told me something funny about their life, which has gone into the magazine.’
Rose, 30, became the first regular deaf character on EastEnders and was the first deaf contestant on Strictly Come Dancing, famously going on to lift the glitterball trophy in 2021. She won the TV Moment of the Year Bafta after briefly dancing to silence. The powerful choreography choice gave an insight into what she experienced every day.
Rose then used her fame to throw all her support behind MP Rosie Cooper’s bill asking for BSL to be legally recognised as a language, which was passed in 2022 and her passion for challenging labels and BSL has continued to be unwavering.
The activist’s efforts haven’t gone unnoticed by Karen. ‘The whole project was Rose’s baby. She made us all feel special and became a friend,’ she says. ‘Hearing Rose’s story about some of the barriers she’s faced being deaf made me sad and gave us all the credence then to carry on with this because we felt it had to be done.’
After seeing the benefits firsthand, Karen knows that Rose is correct in encouraging a wider usage of BSL.
‘I do believe that if other retirement villages and more elderly people could learn it there would be less loneliness,’ she adds.
Hearing loss is a major public health issue – in the UK, 11 million people are hard of hearing, while 1.2 million adults are unable to hear most conversational speech – and the hope is the documentary will demonstrate the value BSL can have in all our lives, the joy of communicating and the power of community.
Whether the messaging hits home and inspires real change is yet to be seen, but for Karen and her friends at Hughenden Gardens, the journey is continuing. They still have weekly lessons and regularly use BSL to communicate with each other.
‘I know plenty of deaf people but before this, it never actually occurred to me that if I learned to sign, I could talk to them,’ she admits. ‘Now I am on my way to being able to talk to anybody. You don’t need to be lonely in this village.’

TVDavid Genat made history by winning the most money ever given away on network TV in the US – but he still hasn’t received his jackpot yet.
The Survivor star totally stole the show when he took part on season two of Peacock’s Deal or No Deal Island, and won the competition on Tuesday night’s finale, taking home a whopping $5.8million.
The gameshow follows contestants as they are transported to paradise in the hopes of winning a fortune, with different sums of money hidden around the island – they then complete challenges to secure briefcases, which are then used in nightly Deal or No Deal games.
In gripping scenes filmed last August, the 45-year-old was down to his last two cases, containing either $75 or the $12.2m grand prize, when he was offered a total of $5.8m from banker Chrissy Teigen.
He accepted the offer which proved to be the right move as his own case only had $75 inside, meaning he almost lost out on an eye-watering sum.
However, despite filming ending last summer, David shared that he has yet to get his winnings – but he has ‘already started spending it’.
Detailing his plans for the money in a new interview, he told Entertainment Weekly: ‘It’s not in the account just yet.
‘I remember just after everything happened, someone came and shoved a contract in my face and they were like, “So you need to sign this to facilitate getting the money.” And I was like, “Okay, let me just have a little read here.”
‘At the top it was like, “We such and such declare we will sign over the value of $5.8 million to the assigned.” And I was signing my name on that line. It was heavy.’
While we would be sending hourly requests for a bank transfer, David explained that he hasn’t even ‘asked that question yet’ of when he can expect the $5million to hit his account.
He also told the outlet that his plan, if he didn’t accept the deal, was to actually switch cases at the final moment, meaning he could have walked away with more than double his money.
Although he missed out on taking home a briefcase containing more than $12million, the contestant was much happier with what he ended up with – when he gets it, that is.
‘I wanted to do something that had never been done before. I wanted to accomplish something that had never been done,’ he continued. ‘And at 5.8, I do that. I leave a little bit of room for someone else to maybe do something bigger in the game.
‘Also at 5.8, I’m still motivated to do something. At 12.2. I’m like, check me out, I’m done. I’m not good to society anymore. That’s just too much money for me. I can’t handle it.
‘So I have thought about it obviously, but I just feel like it’s just such a great amount of money. And if I’m smart, then I can turn 5.8 to 12.2.’
Game show icons will be beside themselves at the prospect of beating David’s win next season, but host Joe Manganiello shared that the finale actually presented everyone involved with a ‘future challenge’ for the upcoming episodes.
He told Deadline: ‘What’s going to happen next season? How are we going to top that? This season finale is so unbelievable. The person who wins winds up breaking the all-time television game show record for money won.
‘What actually had to happen in order for that to go down is … I mean, people are going to be talking about it. It’s unbelievable.’
Deal or No Deal Island is available to stream on Peacock.

TVDancing on Ice has been axed by ITV, it has been confirmed.
The show only just wrapped up its 17th season, and today the broadcaster confirmed it will be put on ice in 2026, with no plans to make another season.
An ITV Spokesperson told Metro: ‘Following another successful series earlier this year, Dancing On Ice will be rested in 2026 with no current plans for another series.
‘We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the cast and crew who have worked on the show since 2006, and over the previous 17 series, for all of their hard work both on and off the ice.’
Over 200 celebrities have taken part in the show over the 245 episodes, which have required an estimated tens of thousands of sequins since it was first broadcast in 2006.
Earlier this month Holly Willoughby and Stephen Mulhern announced Sam Aston would lift the trophy after competing against Anton Ferdinand and Michaela Strachan in the final of the most recent series.
But days later, rumours began to whirl that the show’s future was in jeopardy after dwindling viewing figures and high production costs.
Ahead of the final, staffers were reportedly warned that the show was over unless there were some sensational finale viewing figures.
They told The Sun: ‘Dancing On Ice is an expensive production and there are questions over whether ITV is getting bang for its buck.
‘Staff working on it aren’t holding out much hope.’
They also claimed there was ‘no denying’ the format had become ‘tired’ and they were failing to attract big names so if Dancing On Ice continues, it will need a major revamp.
‘Changes are needed and it’s likely it’ll be rested and given a new lease of life,’ the source added.
In response, an ITV spokesperson told Metro: ‘The Dancing on Ice team has been fully concentrating on the much anticipated series finale last night and therefore no decision has been made.’
Series 1 of Dancing on Ice in 2006 attracted an audience of 9.8million.
Figures peaked at 10.2m viewers in 2011’s series 6, and series 17 this year, with just 3.3m viewers tuning in, saw its lowest ratings ever.
A source also told The Mirror earlier this year: ‘We need bums on seats, but the ratings have dropped to a point where it’s difficult to justify the cost.’
The final episode of this season garnered 2.7million viewers in what’s been described as its lowest figures ever.
Most of the series were fronted by Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, before Schofield was replaced by Stephen Mulhern for the past two years.
As for host Holly – who returned to Dancing On Ice when Phillip Schofield left ITV – The Sun have previously reported that the BBC is lining her up for a reboot of Blind Date.

TVNetflix has just dropped its 11th TV series from Harlan Coben, so ready yourself for your next binge-watch.
Caught is the first ever Argentinian adaptation of the prolific thriller writer’s novels and comes just weeks after the release of his last Netflix offering, Missing You.
This time, the crime drama centres on Ema Garay (Soledad Villamil), a renowned journalist known for exposing criminals who manage to evade justice.
However, her life takes an unexpected turn when respected figure Leo Mercer (Juan Minujín) becomes the prime suspect in her investigation into the disappearance of a 16-year-old girl.
Caught is one of the 14 Harlan Coben books being adapted for Netflix as part of the multi-million-pound mega deal he agreed with the streamer in 2018.

To date, his Netflix projects include UK productions Missing You, Fool Me Once, The Stranger, Stay Close and Safe, French productions Gone For Good and Just One Look; Polish productions Hold Tight and The Woods and Spanish production The Innocent.
Despite frequently storming the global top ten charts on Netflix, Coben’s adaptations typically receive a mixed reaction from viewers and critics, with The I previously branding Fool Me Once ‘junk food television.’
Rosalind Eleazar, who starred in this year’s Missing You, previously shared her response to the Coben backlash to Metro, saying that his shows have a ‘particular USP’ that viewers appreciate.
She said: ‘The thing is with reviews, everyone has an opinion. With these shows, what’s interesting is that if there are bad reviews, the figures say something very different.
‘Shows should be allowed to live in the space that they’re taking up. There are so many different styles of shows, and the Harlan Coben shows have a really particular USP, and people love it.
‘They absolutely love these shows because he’s a genius at twists and turns and taking audiences down wrong roads. It’s a genre that people have loved since the dawn of time.
Indeed, Fool Me Once – set in the aftermath of the brutal murder of ex-Army Officer Maya’s (Michelle Keegan) husband Joe (Richard Armitage) – went down a storm with viewers.
After getting ‘hooked’ on the thriller, fans flocked to X to joke they were going to call into work sick to watch the remaining episodes.
One viewer, Michelle Pryde, raved: ‘5 episodes deep into #FoolMeOnce and questioning whether I really need a job and could call in sick for work tomorrow as I need to finish it!! I am HOOKED. @michkeegan is just brilliant.’
Echoing Michelle’s sentiment, Jennifer Smith enthused: ‘@HarlanCoben I am supposed to go back to work tomorrow after this holiday break but I can’t stop watching #FoolMeOnce. Back to being sleep deprived I go.’
Angela Bennion remarked: ‘Binged, done. Absolutely fantastic storyline but #thisgirl @michkeegan is another level. On the edge of my sofa all day #FoolMeOnce #superstar x.’
Caught is available to stream on Netflix.

Actor Colin Carmichael (L) has had an impressive career since his 118 118 days, including a major role in a massive film this year (Picture: Rex/Shutterstock) A noughties advertising legend has claimed a role in one of the highest-profile cinema releases of 2025 so far. […]
FilmA noughties advertising legend has claimed a role in one of the highest-profile cinema releases of 2025 so far.
In 2003, a US-owned directory enquiry service with the number 118 118 launched its wildly popular advertising campaign in the UK featuring two male runners clad in red and white running gear with matching moustaches and shaggy 70s hairstyles.
They would race around and over things, announcing ‘got your number!’ to passers-by, in a series of adverts that have been truly hard to forget even decades later, finishing in 2010.
Now one of those famous runners, Colin Carmichael, has appeared in Disney’s $250million (£194m) live-action remake of Snow White – if you managed to spot him without that iconic facial hair.
Carmichael appears in the role of bandit Farno, one of the seven gang members that live in the forest with Jonathan (Andrew Burnap) as supporters of Snow White’s father, the King.
It was these actors who were spotted filming on set in the UK and erroneously reported as being the ‘magical creatures’ replacing the seven dwarfs in this version of the 1937 classic Disney animated feature.
They are, in fact, a different group of characters altogether, who Snow White (Rachel Zegler) and the CGI-rendered dwarfs end up encountering further into the story as she flees her villainous step-mother, the Evil Queen (Gal Gadot).
It’s not the only major release Carmichael has been in recently either, as the actor also appeared as Doctor Nidik, the human professor who replaces goat teacher Doctor Dillamond at Shiz, in the massively popular movie adaptation of smash-hit musical Wicked.
Since getting his first big break as an actor thanks to the 188 188 commercials, reportedly at the age of 26 according to Isle of Wight County Press, Carmichael has enjoyed a varied career.
As well as appearing in other adverts for brands like Carling, Belvita, Go Compare and Captain Morgan, he has also popped up in episodes of Coupling, The Bill, Outlander and Black Mirror.
He’s acted in Worzel Gummidge, Detectorists and Secret Diary of a Call Girl, as well as films St Trinian’s 2: The Legend of Fritton’s Gold and Hot Fuzz.
Snow White was the number one film globally after hitting cinemas on Friday and claiming $87.3m (£67.7m) over its opening weekend.
However, it has fallen short of hopes and estimates that were planning for $100m (£77.6m) after a series of controversies around the much-delayed film kept its title in the headlines for years ahead of release thanks to sustained backlash.
While reviews were mixed to negative, Snow White has attracted some praise – especially for leading lady Zegler – and has manged a healthy 74% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from fan scores compared to a more dubious 42% from 210 critics’ reactions.
Disney’s Lion King live-action prequel, Mufasa, also managed to pull in a respectable $717m (£556m) worldwide after flopping during its first weekend with just $37.6m (£29.1m).
However on IMDb, Snow White is currently sitting on just 1.7/10 from over 145,000 ratings in the five days since it came out.
Snow White is in cinemas now.

GamingSony has announced the PlayStation Plus line-up for April, and fans of classic films and/or Digimon will be extremely happy.
Video games based on movies have a spotty track record at best, but in recent years that’s become less and less true, especially for titles that go back to older cinematic classics.
Recent titles like Indiana Jones And The Great Circle prove games are sometimes better suited than movies to continue older franchise, a rule which also applies to RoboCop: Rogue City. Developed by Teyon, the first person shooter features an original storyline, set after the events of 1990 film RoboCop 2.
The game is far better than anyone expected and, ahead of its standalone expansion Unfinished Business later this year, it will be available to all PlayStation Plus subscribers from April 1, 2025.
As confirmed by Sony, RoboCop: Rogue City will be free for PlayStation Plus subscribers across all tiers on PlayStation 5 next month.
Another surprisingly good adaptation of an older film franchise is 2023’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, will be available across PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.
It’s a asymmetrical multiplayer survival horror in the vein of Dead By Daylight, only more polished and with a very goofy system where you level up grandpa with blood to help killers spot survivors.
While it was somewhat overlooked when it originally came out, it’s a surprisingly faithful recreation of the classic 1974 horror film – complete with several maps and characters pulled from the not-so iconic sequels.
The final game on the PlayStation Plus line-up for April is Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth – Hacker’s Memory, which is a sequel to 2015’s Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth. It is a role-playing game in the Digimon universe, where you command up to three companions in battles.
All of these games will be available to claim from April 1 to May 5, 2025. It’s worth noting you can just add them to your library during this time and download them later, as long as you have a PlayStation Plus subscription.
You still have until March 31, 2025 to pick up this month’s PlayStation Plus games, which includes Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Sonic Colours, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection.

After a three-year wait and a reported $200,000,000 (£155,100,000) budget, Severance season 2 has concluded with the ‘best finale of all time.’
But in the Apple TV Plus sci-fi drama’s fashion, the critically acclaimed show has created more questions than it answered.
In an attempt to illuminate some of Severance’s mysteries, Metro spoke to Dichen Lachman, who plays outie Mark’s (Adam Scott) wife Gemma and Lumon lab rat Ms Casey.
Here are the 43-year-old’s own theories on the best show on TV, including everything from whether Gemma’s car accident was faked to why she was singled out by Lumon.
First of all, what was your response when you read the ending in the script in which innie Mark chooses Helly R (Britt Lower) over Gemma?
Initially, season two was going to end a little earlier when Mark was looking at both Gemma and Helly. Then it changed to him actually making a choice between them.
All I knew when I read the script was that the fans were gonna have a moment once he made that decision, because you have been rooting for Helly and Mark S, but also you’ve been rooting for [outie] Mark, who has been grieving his wife. It’s a very difficult place to be as an audience member, having fallen in love with these characters.
Let’s take it right back to the car crash; did it actually happen? Or was it a rouse? Some fans believe Gemma approached Lumon and was the first person to be severed to remove the pain of losing a child.
It’s a mystery. I will say, though, just as a fan or an actor, the moment when she says goodbye because she’s leaving for a dinner party to play charades, I feel like I believe that she’s going to play charades.
I don’t know if Gemma would lie about where she is going and head to Lumon – but I could be completely wrong. I didn’t play it like that, and I didn’t have that intention when I was doing the scene.
In that moment when I said goodbye to Mark, I was just trying to get the relationship back to normal because they had just been through so much [after the loss of their child].
Why, out of all the inhabitants of Severance’s fictional town Kier in the fictional state PE, did Lumon choose Gemma?
I don’t know why they chose Gemma. Another journalist mentioned that maybe it was her blood, like how people can have a genetic thing that makes them a good candidate for [testing].
At the end of Severance season 2, it was implied that once Mark S completed Cold Harbor, Gemma would be killed. Why?
On the show, death can mean different things, because they had a funeral forIrving’s [John Turturro] innie [even though he is alive on the outside. And when Gemma and Mark are running away after escaping from the Cold Harbor room, Dr Mauer [Robby Benson] says, “You’ll kill them all.” So death can mean different things, I think.
But I mean why would they [kill Gemma], maybe they’re going to take her chip out? I have no idea. Either way, I knew that when they implied that they were going to kill her, that maybe Gemma would be dead. But who knows about the other innings? Maybe there are multiple chips in her mind?
The widely accepted theory about Lumon is that their modus operandi is to end human suffering and abolish pain. Do you agree?
Yes, I think so, because it’s so consistent with our society at large. We do everything we can to try and avoid anything unpleasant, and so it seems that a big company would do a lot of research into being like, you don’t have to feel the pain of childbirth, you don’t have to feel the pain of going to the dentist or the long airplane rides. Why would anyone ever pay for a business class ticket if they could just make their innie fly? They just wake up in another country. And so I think fans are absolutely spot on. I could be wrong, but that’s what would make the most sense to me.
What is the wildest fan theory you’ve stumbled across?
I think we’ve all picked the same one. So a few days ago, someone started circulating this idea that Ricken [Michael Chernus] is a goat and was finding little things in the show to try and back up that claim. Tere’s something so fun about that one that all of us as the cast have latched onto.
What are your own theories for Severance season 3 and will Helly, Mark and Gemma actually be able to escape Lumon?
I’m not sure what’s possible around the technology because, remember, Mark has tried to go through the reintegration process, and he’s having these flashes, so I actually have no idea what’s going to happen to his brain. The last person who did that, it didn’t end up so well for them.
What they come up with in the writers’ room, I will not have anticipated. I can tell you this: I hope I get to participate more in season three.
Severance is available to stream on Apple TV Plus.

Marvel bosses surprised fans on Wednesday by opting to unveil the sprawling, star-studded cast of Avengers: Doomsday, headed by Robert Downey Jr, in a rolling livestream – but not everyone was satisfied.
Lasting over five hours, with a new actor announced every 10-15 minutes, the studio kicked off by revealing Chris Hemsworth’s return to the MCU, before the likes of Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright and Paul Rudd were confirmed.
Many fans were thrilled to also have the nostalgic additions of Sir Patrick Stewart, Sir Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn and James Marsden onboard as their mutant characters who first appeared in the X-Men films back in 2000, with Cumming along for the sequel as Nightcrawler in 2003.
Wyatt Russell, Tenoch Huerta Mejia, Simu Liu and Florence Pugh were also revealed as names on the back of chairs, alongside Kelsey Grammer, Lewis Pullman and Danny Ramirez.
Kirby’s Fantastic Four co-stars Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Pedro Pascal, as well as David Harbour, Winston Duke, Hannah John-Kamen, Tom Hiddleston and Channing Tatum all had their seats added to the line-up too.
However, despite 26 actors being announced, some fans were unhappy to see that Elizabeth Olsen hadn’t been named among the cast.
‘Not now honey, mommy is waiting for a chair to reveal Elizabeth Olsen’s return as Wanda,’ quipped @itsjustanx on X as the livestream was underway, while Chris Del Ray wrote: ‘Elizabeth Olsen please I am begging on my knees.’
When no Olsen return as Wanda Maximoff, aka the Scarlet Witch, was forthcoming, a lot of upset was shared online, with fans saying they’d been ‘robbed’ and vowing to boycott the film.
‘No elizabeth olsen? no one’s watching,’ claimed Kyla, while @Prince_Akpolo added: ‘All that cast and no Elizabeth Olsen. We’ve been robbed.’
‘If elizabeth olsen is not returning I don’t want to watch it,’ said Riri while another fan shared: ‘Like how do they have Channing Tatum but not Elizabeth Olsen I’m just NOT UNDERSTANDING!!!’
Tatum is returning as Gambit, a role he first played in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine after years of trying to get a solo movie off the ground ultimately failed.
Olsen’s Wanda was last seen in 2022 film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where she supposedly died but no body was shown.
‘No Tom Holland, No Chris Evans, no Benedict Cumberbatch, no Charlize Theron, No Famke Janssen, No Halle Berry, No Hugh Jackman or Ryan Reynolds, No Elizabeth Olsen…’ @WandaxCoven also pointed out on social media.
However, sources claim that Marvel isn’t quite finished revealing the Avengers: Doomsday cast just yet, according to The Hollywood Reporter, so there could be hope yet.
Analysis from Metro’s film expert Tori Brazier
Much has been written about the shaky ground the MCU currently finds itself on after oversaturating fans with multiple movies and TV shows a year for the past several.
It got to the point of official ‘superhero fatigue’ back in 2023, when Marvel suffered five flops including The Marvels’ disastrous $206million (£159m) worldwide box office (when the production budget was reportedly $220m (£170m) alone).
It’s crucial that Avengers: Doomsday, helmed by Captain America and Infinity War/Endgame filmmakers the Russo Brothers – who have previously demonstrated a golden touch – be a big success.
Fans were already stunned when Robert Downey Jr’s return to the MCU was revealed after his Oscar success, and in a different role no less, but it’s clear that Marvel isn’t just resting on that.
Chris Hemsworth is back too after he completed his contract as Thor with the company, alongside over 20 of the biggest and post popular characters – including his co-star Tom Hiddleston.
While no one has the time to tune into the entirety of such a frustratingly long livestream, it was a ballsy move from Marvel because they did in fact keep a sustained captive audience of millions, even if they were grumbling about it.
But either way, that leads to crazy dominance on social media and Google for the brand, who suddenly managed to build excitement for the 2026 movie from nothing all over again by showing us… chairs. And a brief glimpse of Downey Jr.
For those who are less dyed-in-the-wool Marvel fans it’s probably most exciting that the new cast members include a group from the 2000 movie X-Men, back in the fold, as well as – for the committed fans – confirmed returns already for newer stars like the casts of upcoming flicks The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Thunderbolts*.
The pulling power of Marvel – and its cheque book – clearly remains unrivalled in Hollywood, even with the likes of the Leonardo Di Caprio-type superhero holdouts. So even those not hugely fussed by the comic book aspects of Avengers: Doomsday will likely be drawn in by their favourite actors (either of the moment or of historic standing), and curiosity.
The footage ended with Downey Jr – whose return to the MCU was confirmed last year – taking his place in his seat at the very end of the line-up.
In the final seconds of the video, which aired for much of the day, he could be seen sitting down before shushing the audience.
Despite claims that interest is waning in all things Marvel, more than 7.5million X users have tuned into the stream on the platform, with thousands more watching on YouTube, TikTok and Facebook.
That means millions of people were sat staring at a row of chairs, waiting for the next name to drop, leaving them somewhat baffled.
Twitter user Jack begged: ‘Marvel please hurry up I don’t have all day to stare at this chair I need to see the big announcement.’
James Viscardi observed: ‘Marvel making fans stare at a Chris Hemsworth chair for five minutes is a weird kind of psyop to make sure “they still got it.”’
Leyton agreed: ‘The fact that Marvel has 2 million people on here alone watching CHAIRS… this is literally just a flex to show they’ve still got it I kinda respect it [sic].’
Ale added: ‘Marvel is the only franchise that can get a million people in a livestream looking at chairs for 20 minutes this is so unserious.’
Avengers: Doomsday is due to be released on May 1, 2026 – while little else is known about the flick, RDJ confirmed he would be returning to the MCU in the new role of villain Doctor Doom.
He famously played Iron Man and made his debut as the superhero in 2008, before going on to star in eight more films.
Appearing at San Diego Comic-Con last year, Joe Russo previously teased the huge name that was lined up to tackle the evil character.
‘As proof of the unimaginable possibilities in the Marvel multi-universe, we give you the one person who could play Victor von Doom,’ he announced.
Ever the showman, Robert then unmasked himself to gasps from the huge crowd, quipping: ‘New mask, same task.
‘What did I tell you? I like playing complicated characters.’

TVA ‘compelling’ crime thriller that many viewers rushed to binge-watch will only be up on Netflix for two more weeks.
First airing in 2014, The Missing was a British anthology drama written by brothers Harry and Jack Williams.
The first season followed the search for a missing boy in France, with the case led by detective Julien Baptiste, played by Tchéky Karyo.
The story unfolded after Tony Hughes (James Nesbitt) and his wife Emily (Frances O’Connor) travelled to France from the UK with their five-year-old son Oliver (Oliver Hunt).
Set in 2006, the family were in the country during the FIFA World Cup and lost their son while watching a football game in a crowded outdoor bar.

With a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the series has many fans.
In its review the New York Times wrote: ‘The Missing is imaginatively written, well cast, chillingly believable and quite addictive.’
‘It is a riveting, heartbreaking, fascinating drama, taking a subject that could easily have been turned into a Lifetime TV Movie melodrama and making it real with its subtle, character-driven grace notes and the breakneck speed of its elaborate plotting,’ Time shared.
‘It’s very good, a swift-moving crime thriller that also takes the time to measure the effects of the crime on Tony and Emily’s marriage, their state of mind, and the lives of the French townspeople who were drawn into the investigation and may be again,’ RogerEbert.com added.
Meanwhile viewers called it ‘captivating’, ‘suspenseful’ and ‘underrated’.
It was then followed by a second season in 2016, which then followed a missing girl in Germany and starred David Morrisey and Keeley Hawes as her parents.
The Missing then led to a spin-off series – Baptiste – being released in 2019.
However, fans wanting to rewatch the show, or those wanting to dive in for the first time, will only be able to do so until April 12 – when the series will be taken down from Netflix.
In an interview with the BBC, the Williams brothers spoke about incorporating the thriller element into the character-driven drama.
‘There’s so much good TV, you need a reason to come back. You need a reason to keep watching. When we write, we really try to think about how to end an episode in a place that makes me want to come back and write the next one,’ Jack said.
‘And you have to do it in a way that isn’t cheap, that’s important to the story, and helpful to moving forward with our characters,’ Harry added.
The Missing is on Netflix until April 12.

TVSeth Rogen and James Franco’s feud has taken an unexpected turn after the pair revealed their friendship was ‘over’.
Today marks the global release day of Seth’s new Apple TV Plus show The Studio, which has earned universal acclaim from critics.
The 10-part series centres on Hollywood studio executive Matt (Seth) as he juggles corporate demands with creative ambitions to try and keep movies alive and relevant.
The Studio also stars the likes of Catherine O’Hara and features cameos from A-listers including Martin Scorsese, Charlize Theron and Olivia Wilde.
However, perhaps unexpectedly, the show also features Dave Franco, the brother of James Franco. In 2021, the Spider-Man actor agreed to pay $2.2m (£1.7m) to settle a legal case after being accused of sexual misconduct.
The 127 Hours star’s lawyers previously described the allegations as ‘false and inflammatory’ and he previously denied the claims. But following the news, Seth came out and said he ‘despises abuse’.
He also added that he will not be working with his longtime collaborator moving forward.
Yet, Seth’s newest show The Studio features Dave working alongside him for the first time since the allegations against his brother surfaced.
Reacting on X, @nocontextvp said: ‘Dave Franco being here but not his brother is frying me so bad.’
But while many people might be surprised to see the pair working together, given the potential awkwardness due to Seth ending his friendship with James, The Studio co-creator Evan Goldberg set the record straight.
Speaking to LADbible, Goldberg said: ‘No, no, we’ve been working with Davey [Franco] for a long, long time, ever since Neighbours, and we’ve known him… He was in Superbad back then, so we’ve known him forever.
‘He was just the person that came up in our minds for this Ron Howard film that is a film within our [series] for Alphabet City.
‘Yeah, it was just – he was the natural, selected choice.’
James recently reflected on the breakdown of his friendship with Seth, who he has starred with in Pineapple Express, The Interview and The Disaster Artist.
In an interview with Variety, he said: ‘I haven’t talked to Seth. I love Seth, we had 20 great years together, but I guess it’s over. And not for lack of trying. I’ve told him how much he’s meant to me.’
Having previously said in 2018 he would work with James again, Seth told Sunday Times’ Culture Magazine in 2021: ‘What I can say is that I despise abuse and harassment and I would never cover or conceal the actions of someone doing it, or knowingly put someone in a situation where they were around someone like that.’
He added: ‘I look back to that interview in 2018 where I comment that I would keep working with James, and the truth is that I have not and I do not plan to do it right now.’
Explaining that his decision was ‘not a coincidence’, Seth stated: ‘I can say it, um, you know, it has changed many things in our relationship and our dynamic.’
In 2021, James admitted to sleeping with students at his acting school, saying: ‘I was not clearheaded.’
Speaking on The Jess Cagle Podcast, James stressed that he had not started the school to lure women for sexual purposes.
‘I suppose at the time, my thinking was if it’s consensual, OK,’ he continued. ‘At the time I was not clearheaded.’
The actor added he had kept quiet for such a long period because ‘there were people that were upset with me and I needed to listen’.
He agreed to pay $2.2m (£1.6m) in July after being sued for engaging in ‘sexually-charged behaviour towards female students’.
The class-action lawsuit, led by Sarah Tither-Kaplan and Toni Gaal, alleged he abused his position and dangled opportunities for roles in his films.
Students claimed they were victims of fraud for paying for the acting school while being sexually objectified and intimidated.
The lawsuit alleged that abuses took place at Franco’s Studio 4 film school, which opened in 2014 and closed in 2017.
Tither-Kaplan had previously come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against James, shortly after he won a Golden Globe for his film The Disaster Artist in 2018.
He denied them at the time.
The Studio will premiere on Apple TV+ with the first two episodes on 26 March followed by one episode every Wednesday until 21 May.
