TVDennis the Menace star Jay North has died, his friends have confirmed.
The 73-year-old died peacefully at his Lake Butler, Florida, home on Sunday at noon after previously being diagnosed with colorectal cancer.
He is survived by his wife Cindy, and her daughters from a previous marriage, whom North ‘adored’.
Initial reports on his death via TMZ claim he was unable to see his friends recently after medical staff advised him to isolate due to his worsening condition.
North’s friend, Laurie Jacobson, announced the news on Facebook, writing: ‘Jeanne Russell just called us with terribly sad, but not unexpected news.
‘As many of his fans know, he had a difficult journey in Hollywood and after…but he did not let it define his life.
‘He had a heart as big as a mountain, loved his friends deeply. He called us frequently and ended every conversation with “I love you with all my heart.”
‘And we loved him with all of ours. A life-long friend of Jon’s, a brother to Jeanne and a dear friend to me, we will miss him terribly. He is out of pain now. His suffering is over. At last he is at peace.’
Laurie’s husband, Lassie alum Jon Provost, added: ‘I’ve known Jay for almost 70 years, now you can rest in peace Jay.
‘It wasn’t as easy for you as it was for some of us, not that it was a piece of cake that’s for sure, but you did suffer a lot more than most.
‘You were a great guy Jay and I miss you with all my heart, but I know you’re at peace now.’
North famously played Dennis in the CBS sitcom for four seasons, from 1959 to 1963, starring in all 146 episodes.
However, it wasn’t what kickstarted his entertainment career, as he appeared in Cartoon Express in 1957 and the game show Queen for a Day the year after. North later made limited cameos as himself in various series, including an episode of The Simpsons.
As he progressed into adulthood, North retreated from the limelight and began working as a correctional officer in Florida. It’s believed he assisted children in the juvenile system.
According to his pals, North also worked with death row inmates with troubled childhoods.
It was a role he took great pride in, having said he endured physical and verbal abuse himself at the hands of his aunt, who would assault him if he made mistakes as Dennis.
Those working on the children’s programme were unaware of the alleged abuse happening off-set, as was North’s mother. Sadly, the actor later became unable to rewatch episodes because of his trauma.
His co-star, Jeannie Russell, previously said: ‘If Jay says she abused him in private, then I’m inclined to believe it.
‘The sheer demands of being in every scene all by itself had to be extremely stressful. Any extra pressure from [his aunt] would have made it unbearable.’
While North once stated that he wished he’d ‘never been part’ of the series due to his own suffering and unhappiness, he did praise the other cast members as ‘wonderful’.
He also told E! in 1999: ‘I am so happy that I was able to have such a positive impact on people’s lives.
‘I’m going to write my autobiography and then I’m just going to live a contented, happy life here in Lake Butler with the people I love, and kind of just vanish into the mists of time.’

FilmJames Bond speculation is a favourite pastime of both Brits and film fans alike, as we endure the agonising wait for a formal casting to be announced.
Since Daniel Craig completed his last assignment as 007 in 2021 with No Time to Die, we’ve survived three years of gossip and rumours with no confirmation as to who the new actor to take up the spy’s licence to kill could be.
This speculation has only intensified following an historic deal in which creative control of the franchise was handed to Amazon after Amazon Studios purchased MGM+ for $8.45billion (£6.7billion).
While Aaron Taylor-Johnson is still considered the favourite for the role, a source firmly denied his involvement in March when the speculation reached fever pitch.
In the months since, several new candidates have shaken up the Bond race too, as bookies and fans keep a sharp eye on rising talent and major new Netflix stars. Now, there’s a new Bond potential on the scene—Adolescence star Stephen Graham.
The list of contenders for the role is drastically different to three years ago, when Idris Elba, Tom Hardy and Game of Thrones and Marvel actor Richard Madden dominated the conversation.
So, who could be the next James Bond in 2024? Let’s take a look at the most likely bets…
Following the unfathomable success of Netflix drama Adolescence, Eddie Miller actor Stephen Graham has become a contender in the Bond race.
The four-parter, in which each episode has been filmed in one take, was watched 66million times in its first two weeks, so it’s no surprise the Liverpudlian star has now appeared in the odds.
In Adolescence, Graham plays the dad of 13-year-old Jamie. The schoolboy is arrested on suspicion of murdering a female classmate, opening up a whole can of worms about the kind of nefarious content he’s been consuming online and what signs were missed.
Also known for his roles in This is England, Line of Duty, A Thousand Blows, and Boiling Point, Graham is no stranger to a gritty role.
As such, the 51-year-old from Kirkby now has his odds at 66/1—could the next 007 be Scouse?
Funnily enough, also in the list is Ashley Walters at 50/1, who starred in Adolescence as a cop opposite Stephen.
Tornado and Slow Horses star Jack Lowden has become an unlikely favourite to become the next Bond.
His odds currently sit at 4/1, shooting up the list after previously sitting at 8/1, putting him above previous favourites Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Henry Cavill.
The 34-year-old Scottish actor is best known for his role as River Cartwright in thriller series Slow Horses, as well as appearing in The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power, Dunkirk, and Mary Queen of Scots.
Lowden’s wife, Saoirse Ronan, thinks her husband has what it takes to play the superspy after expressing her interest in taking on the role of a villain in the franchise.
When asked if Lowden could also play a villain or if he’d be a better Bond, she told the Happy Sad Confused podcast: ‘He should be Bond. If it’s a choice between the two.
‘Isn’t it nice that I’ve done that?’
James Norton is another star who has experienced years of speculation surrounding the Bond role.
The Happy Valley star, who was nominated for a Bafta for playing the villainous Tommy Lee Royce in the hit series, boasts a 15-year onscreen career including roles in Doctor Who, McMafia, and War & Peace, as well as his long-term role as vicar Sidney Chambers in Grantchester between 2014 and 2019.
He has also appeared in movies like Mr Turner and Little Women opposite Emma Watson and Florence Pugh.
Norton, 38, even revealed what he could bring to the role back in 2021, ahead of No Time To Die’s release.
‘I’m a type one diabetic. How cool would it be to have a diabetic Bond?,’ he commented to Metro.
‘It would be wonderful for all those diabetic kids out there to think even a type one diabetic could be Bond! Other than that, I’d leave it to Daniel and the writers to carry on the legacy.’
The star also praised Craig for ‘re-defining it for a modern era and it’s this human role in a really wonderful way’.
He currently has odds of 9/1 from bookies.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s name has been on everyone’s lips most frequently in the Bond conversation in recent years.
The 34-year-old has been the hot favourite ever since it was reported in December 2022 that he had apparently shot the classic 007 gun barrel sequence that appears in the official opening for every Bond movie.
Taylor-Johnson, who will be seen in the lead role in Kraven the Hunter later this year, has understandably tired of the intense casting speculation since then.
When asked if he gets ‘sick of being asked about Bond’ at the Fall Guy premiere in April, the star sighed and responded, ‘Are you sick of asking the question?’.
If Taylor-Johnson has been given the role, he’s got strong support from his Back to Black filmmaker wife Sam Taylor-Johnson, as well as a former James Bond himself, Pierce Brosnan.
His current odds are at 5/1, meaning it’s thought more likely to happen than not for him.
However, it’s Broccoli and her fellow producer and half-brother, Michael G. Wilson, who hold the power to anoint the new James Bond, regardless of who the public might want.
Now we approach the business end of proceedings and an actor who has been in contention to play the suave spy for possibly the longest of anyone—Henry Cavill.
Cavill actually lost out to Craig last time Bond was being cast, way back in 2005, because he was deemed too young for the role at the time, at just 22.
Almost 20 years later, though, and the Superman actor and star of The Witcher still has many fans pulling for him, especially because he made it so far last time.
In November 2021, he told The Hollywood Reporter that ‘nothing is off the table’ in terms of him replacing Craig.
‘I think it would be very exciting to have a conversation with the producers. In an ideal world, I’d never have to turn anything down,’ the 41-year-old shared.
‘Nothing is off the table. It’s an honour to even be part of that conversation.’
However, producer Barbara Broccoli has since indicated that they are looking for a younger actor to take on the role – someone in their late 20s or early 30s—as signing up to the franchise is likely to be a 10 to 12-year commitment.
Despite this, Cavill’s odds are 3/1.
Theo James also sits at 5/2 after his successful stint leading Guy Ritchie’s The Gentleman series for Netflix and Osgood Perkins’ insane horror film The Monkey.
The 39-year-old White Lotus star also ticked off a very Bond-worthy advertising campaign recently after writhing around on a boat in a tiny pair of white trunks with model Victoria Ceretti for a new Dolce and Gabbana advert.
James has appeared in everything from the Divergent film series with Shailene Woodley to Underworld movies with Kate Beckinsale and appeared as Lady Mary’s lover who memorably expired in bed in the first-ever episode of Downton Abbey.
He’s also flexed his brooding British muscles as original male lead Sidney Parker in the period drama Sanditon, before exiting the Jane Austen series after one season, breaking fans’ hearts.
The actor appears pretty comfortable in play for the role of Bond.
Babygirl star Harris Dickinson has proved a popular choice for 007 after appearing in the steamy thriller with Nicole Kidman.
Harris, 28, made his film debut in the 2017 coming-of-age drama Beach Rats, scoring acclaim for his performance as lost teenager Frankie.
He went on to star in the Disney blockbuster sequel Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and appeared in The King’s Man, Where the Crawdads Sing, and the 2023 best picture nominee Triangle of Sadness.
Prior to his star-making performance in Babygirl, he appeared opposite Zac Efron in the tragic wrestling biopic The Iron Claw.
He was rumoured last year to be in the running as young John Lennon in Sam Mendes’ series of films about The Beatles.
His odds are at 9/1.
Callum Turner has already proved he can handle action in the TV show Masters of the Air, and has also featured in the film Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. He’s got the acting chops, but he’s also not so famous that he couldn’t just be associated with the Bond role, which could be appealing to the bosses.
You may know him for his film work, but you might also be aware of Turner, 34, through his relationship with a very famous pop star – Dua Lipa – who definitely adds to his star power.
Lipa would also be an excellent choice for the Bond theme song, and perhaps even a little cameo after her mermaid impression in Barbie. Did someone say power couple?
His odds with are 20/1.
After starring alongside Daniel Craig in Variety’s Actors on Actors series, fans were convinced it was simply the industry foreshadowing that Josh O’Connor would take over as 007.
Josh, 34, known for portraying a young King Charles III in Netflix’s The Crown, as well as starring in Challengers, La Chimera, and Lee, has an impressive portfolio.
However, he seemed to dash hopes of taking on the role in a recent interview with Deadline.
Speaking to the news outlet, he reportedly smiled as he was asked his thoughts on the matter, admitting: ‘I have no thoughts, really.
‘The truth is that … I think in the space of a week, I made a joke about, wouldn’t it be funny if I played Bond? Then, me and Daniel [Craig] did an Actors on Actors, and then something else happened, and then suddenly I was James Bond.’
He continued: ‘If I am Bond, I don’t know about it.’
Despite this, his odds are still at 12/1.
Paul Mescal was first tipped for the role of Bond in 2020 following his successful stint in Normal People.
His odds have been up and down ever since, peaking after he appeared in Gladiator 2 alongside Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington.
Mescal’s odds of starring in Bond are currently sitting at 22/1.
He has a packed slate looking into the future after gis role as Lucius Verus in the Gladiator sequel, next appearing in Oliver Hermanus’ The History of Sound based on the short story by Ben Shattuck.
Mescal will also star in Chloé Zhao’s historical drama Hamnet as William Shakespeare alongside the likes of Jessie Buckley, Joe Alwyn, and Emily Watson.
Richard Linklater’s epic musical Merrily We Roll Along also has Mescal attached.
It is told over the course of 20 years and does not yet have a release date, which could put a spanner in the works for Mescal being announced as Bond in the near future.
Regé-Jean Page, 36, is an actor who has stuck around when it comes to potential Bonds for a while.
The star broke through at the end of 2020 with his leading role as Simon Basset in the first season of Netflix’s smash hit period drama Bridgerton.
This left him perfectly poised to enter the race as an established new talent, as Craig stepped down from the role the following autumn.
Three years later and he’s still a name bookies will take bets on, appearing in the top 10, although he’s slipped down the ranks a little.
He most recently appeared in the star-studded thriller Black Bag alongside former Bond star Pierce Brosnan as well as Cate Blanchett, Michael Fassbender, Marisa Abela, Tom Burke, and Naomie Harris.
In recent odds, he was placed as a slightly stronger candidate at 12/1.
Theo James – 5/2
Henry Cavill – 3/1
Jack Lowden – 4/1
Aaron Taylor-Johnson – 5/1
James Norton – 9/1
Harris Dickinson – 9/1
Rege-Jene Page – 12/1
Josh O’Connor – 12/1
Richard Madden – 14/1
Callum Turner – 20/1
Paul Mescal – 22/1
Tom Hardy – 25/1
Luke Evans – 25/1
Tom Holland – 28/1
Joe Alwyn – 28/1
Chiwetel Ejiofor – 33/1
Jamie Doran – 33/1
Will Poulter – 33/1
Tom Hiddleston – 33/1
David Jonsson – 33/1

FilmThe new number one film on Netflix globally has been watched a whopping 24,400,000 times since its release – and is inspiring fans to break up with their boyfriends.
The Life List is a rom-com/drama starring Sofia Carlson, Kyle Allen and Connie Britton, and written and directed by Adam Brooks from the novel of the same name by Lori Nelson Spielman.
After the death of her mother Elizabeth (Britton), Alex (Carlson) revisits her childhood aspirations, endeavouring to achieve her old goals, only to discover that pursuing these lifelong dreams takes her on an unforeseen and surprising journey.
She is set on a path to follow the life list she wrote at 13 by her mother, in order to unlock her inheritance as well as another video message from beyond the grave.
Alongside this, Elizabeth gives Alex a true love test to determine if she is truly open to love, which is made of four questions/criteria, something she takes to her boyfriend Finn (Michael Rowland).

Fans of the film have subsequently been making some major life changes after watching The Life List.
‘Adam [Brooks] would call me all the time after test screenings, and he would say that there were so many people that would [tell him], “I ended up breaking up with my boyfriend,” or “I ended up changing or quitting my job”,’ Carlson told Entertainment Weekly of the movie’s impact in raising ‘all these existential questions’.
‘That’s the beauty of this film. It’s so much more than a rom-com,’ the 31-year-old added, who also starred in Netflix’s big end-of-year thriller hit, Carry-On, opposite Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman.
Former Disney Channel star Carlson also shared that she has been inspired to sort out her own life list since making the film – a sentiment echoed by others who have since watched it on Netflix.
‘I rarely find a Netflix Original movie very touching… however, The Life List hit me hard,’ shared Koel Ghosh in a five-star review on Google as she added it to her list of ‘all-time favourites’ and added: ‘Off to writing my own life list!’
‘This movie was so inspiring. I wish I had a life list, maybe I can write one now and see where I’ll be this time next year,’ wrote Destany Torres in her full-marks reaction to the film.
Meanwhile, Mika Ranya insisted that ‘this movie can truly help you heal’, continuing: ‘It’s been 25 years when [sic] my dad died but a portion of me is still wounded, I haven’t completely healed. This movie is teaching me how do it. I will, thank you.’
Another fan agreed, admitting that ‘ordinarily, I wouldn’t be emotionally affected by this type of movie, but I’m giving it five stars because it offers a profound life lesson for viewers who engage with it fully’.
While Melissa Driscoll insisted that the movie deserved ‘one million stars for sure’, Vineet Dharma praised it as ‘a piece of art’, ‘a psychotherapy session’ and a ‘must-watch’.
Charlotte Haggerty claimed that she ‘cried at least 12 times’, while RT marvelled at the fact that they ‘watched this movie and saw pieces of my own life reflected back at me’.
However, not everyone was as captured by The Live List, which does have a 73% fan rating on Rotten Tomatoes but a 47% score from critics on the review aggregator site.
These are the questions Elizabeth asks Alex to test herself with regarding potential partners to find out if she’s truly open to love:
‘Has all the appeal of a three-hour twelve step meeting after you have been sober for 20 years. Not one thing is new, inspiring and triggers bad memories of opportunities lost,’ complained Sue McAley on Google, while Allan chimed in on Rotten Tomatoes: ‘The sun coming up every day is less predictable than this sloppy lump of cheese. About two hours too long.’
‘This movie is unwatchable. The plot is contrived but the terrible acting is what kills it. Sofia Carson is gorgeous, but her acting is painful,’ added Maggie S.
The Life List is streaming exclusively on Netflix now.

TVAmazon Prime Video viewers have had to prise themselves away from their screens after watching an ‘atmospheric’ thriller.
Canadian series The Disappearance is such a compelling crime drama that fans have been rationing the six episodes.
Set in the Montréal suburbs, the French-language show is centred on the disappearance of 10-year-old Anthony (Michael Riendeau), who vanishes from a birthday party.
But the investigation takes a turn when it uncovers dark secrets buried by his family, including parents, Henry (Peter Coyote) and Helen (Camille Sullivan).
On Google, viewers said they were kept ‘guessing until the very end’ by The Disappearance’s ‘unexpected twist.’
Among them was Estelle Berry, who wrote: ‘I loved the show. I found it to be a gripping, poignant story that was well-acted and beautifully filmed. My one criticism of it is the relationship between the nurse and her sick patient; it struck me as very unrealistic and could still have served the plot well if it had been close but less intimate. A Canadian show well worth watching!’
Echoing their sentiment, Catherine Wild said: ‘A good watch. Expected and unexpected twists throughout. Well acted, written and gripping. Once in, I had to stop myself from bingeing the whole series. Peter Coyote is excellent.’
Chris Nixon shared: ‘All I will say is that I am very picky about TV series – and I can tell you now that this was a great TV series to watch!’
Over on IMDb, TJjw-76445 added: ‘Came across this little gem purely by accident & wasn’t disappointed. Lots of impulsive actions & stupid mistakes makes you want to yell at the telly! Highly enjoyable, kept up the suspense & excitement to the climactic end. Well worth the binge.’
The Disappearance is not the only non-English-language thriller gripping Amazon Prime viewers.
They have also been binge-watching Indian supernatural series The Last Hour about the life of a mysterious shaman who can talk to the spirits of dead people Devi (Karma Takapa).
The Hindi-language show sees Devi’s talents deployed to help solve the investigation into the brutal rape and murder of an actress.
He communicates with her soul and relives her last hour in order to amass clues to crack her killer’s identity.
However, Devi’s life is also under threat as he is being hunted down by a dangerous figure from his past.
Viewers who have devoured The Last Hour have labelled it ‘criminally underrated.’
Among them is Reddit user RaatKiRaaani, who said: ‘Such a unique show it was, I remember watching it waay back. It’s criminally underrated they need to bring another season ASAP it has great potential.’
Echoing their sentiment, Google user Astha Arunika raved: ‘Soul-soothing, beautiful and what not!! It will give you a different experience overall. Everything was so perfect about this series, such a perfect cast. Loved every character.’
D Singh enthused: ‘Outstanding!!! Fully enjoyed watching it! Very rich storyline, much thoughtfully created, the idea and art of using native actors so smoothly has got the best out of this production.’
The Disappeared is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

TVMaura Higgins has reportedly filmed her TV comeback weeks after she appeared to kiss Danny Jones at a Brits afterparty.
The Love Island star, 34, has not publicly addressed their embrace but has been sharing social media about various work projects, including a business trip to LA and a gin event launch with Margot Robbie.
Her next venture, and her first on-screen appearance since the embrace with her I’m A Celebrity co-star, Danny, 38, will be the BBC’s reboot of game show Blankety Blank.
Maura reportedly appears as a contestant on the programme hosted by Bradley Walsh and filmed her episode at Maidstone Studios in Kent last month.
A source told The Sun: ‘Since that unfortunate incident, Maura’s kept to modelling jobs and posting glossy social media videos, but this will be her first TV appearance.
‘She’s opening herself up to ribbing and scrutiny, but the BBC has ensured the drunken kiss stays off-limits because it’s a family show.’
While Maura has remained silent on the kissing scandal, Danny issued a public apology to his wife, model Georgia Horsley, 38.
The McFly singer has been married to Georgia, a former Miss England, since 2014, and they have a son, Cooper, together.
In an Instagram Story, he wrote: ‘Sorry it’s taken me a while to post this but I’ve taken some time out to be with those closest to me.
‘I want to deeply apologise to my wife and family for putting them in this situation. I love them so much and we’ll continue to deal with this privately.
‘I love you guys, thank you for your patience, understanding, and support. See you all soon, Danny.’

After his apology, Georgie reportedly moved out of the family home and stayed with her best friend Rose Mahon.
It was later claimed she returned after a week’s break to give her husband a ‘second chance.’
A source told The Sun: ‘Her relationship with Danny was pushed to breaking point and they are still trying to work out what they want.
‘Danny has made it clear he will do anything to make it work.’
The King of the Jungle is set to have a busy summer with gigs lined up with McFly as they go on a joint tour with Busted that extends into the later half of the year across the UK and Ireland.
Georgia is expected to return to her Mum’s The Word! podcast – which she hosts with Kelsey Parker – soon and is set to take it live at the Big Feastival in the Cotswolds in August.
Blankety Blank returned in 2021 after nearly two decades off-screen.
First launched in 1979, the show was inspired by the American game show Match Game.
It was hosted by Sir Terry Wogan from 1979 to 1983 before Les Dawson took over from 1984 to 1990.
Lily Savage eventually revived Blankety Blank from 1997 to 1999 and then again from 2001 to 2002.
Metro has contacted Maura’s reps and the BBC for comment.

TVGladiators star Steel has revealed his son is ‘defying the odds’ after being born prematurely.
The CrossFit athlete, 34, from Leicestershire, who won the title of the UK’s Fittest Man in 2020, joined the first series of the rebooted BBC show in 2024.
On Instagram, Steel, real name Zack George, revealed his partner Samantha George had given birth to their son at 23 weeks, weighing less than two pounds.
Steel said his son, who has been named Leo, was ‘one hell of a strong boy’ and was ‘tiny, fragile and fighting.’
He wrote: ‘Our Precious Boy Leo George.
‘You should still be tucked up inside mummy’s tummy but instead you entered the world on the 26th March 2025 at just 23 weeks weighing one pound eight ounces.
‘You never truly know how quickly your life can be turned upside down but one thing we do know is that you are one hell of a strong boy and you are already defying the odds.
‘Tiny, fragile and fighting.’
The post also contained photos of Samantha in a hospital bed with the baby on her chest, and medical staff around her.
The couple also share daughter Ivy.
In January, Samantha wrote on Instagram that Ivy was ‘very excited to have a new friend very soon’ while sharing pictures of their pregnancy scan.
Steel earned his name through his ‘unbreakable strength’, ranking number 26 out of 126,461 on the global CrossFit leaderboard.
As a child, Steel said he was ‘really unhealthy’ and ‘really lazy’ before overhauling his lifestyle when he was 12.
He previously told Metro: ‘My dad could tell I was quite unhappy, I used to try and skip swimming lessons because I was so self-conscious of how I looked and didn’t take my top off.
‘I used to have McDonald’s and KFC three or four times a week, it was a really unhealthy lifestyle.’
Steel then embarked on a fitness journey and was considering a career as a rugby player before an injury forced him to stop.
Instead, he started CrossFit and has been a professional athlete for a decade.
‘It’s crazy looking back because when I was younger and overweight, I used to watch Gladiators and draw a pretend six pack on my stomach, because I could never think about ever having abs,’ Steel recalled.
‘I used to look at the Gladiators and they had such great six packs and my sister used to play the games in the living room, I’d draw muscles on my stomach and then would play like Duel and things like that. It was quite cool.’

TVAJ Odudu and Will Best know exactly what makes the perfect Celebrity Big Brother ahead of the second series launching on ITV1 tomorrow night.
‘Another David’s dead; that would be amazing,’ says AJ.
It’s been nine years since Tiffany Pollard—who is returning to CBB for its spin-off show Late and Live—mistakenly thought David Gest had died in the Big Brother house and been casually laid to rest in the bedroom.
For context: It was the morning after David Bowie had died while his ex-wife, Angie Bowie, was living with the likes of Pollard, Gemma Collins, and Darren Day in the Celebrity Big Brother house.
Gest, coincidentally, had been feeling under the weather and had been resting away from the other housemates when Angie was given the news that the Heroes legend had died.
Angie then confided in the only person alive who would confuse Liza Minelli’s ex-husband for the greatest musician that ever lived, and all hell broke loose.
Reality television has never quite reached the same heights since.
The first Celebrity Big Brother on ITV aired last year, though, and gave it a good go with a cast that took even Big Brother’s most loyal and optimistic fans by surprise.
Sharon Osbourne—an actual A-list celebrity—was reunited with her former X Factor judge Louis Walsh, which was as iconic as it was unexpected.
He was every bit as chaotic and unfiltered on Celebrity Big Brother as he was on The X Factor, unbelievably frank about his blazing rows with Ronan Keating, called Jedward ‘vile’ while he and Mrs O ripped into James Corden and national treasure Adele with a total lack of awareness that they were on national television.
‘Ideally, you want someone like Louis Walsh who doesn’t know the format, doesn’t know what the hell is going on,’ says Will.
‘Louis divided opinion because he was completely himself,’ says AJ. ‘The concern can be getting a bunch of celebrities who are all media trained and know how to dodge questions, all of that jazz.
‘What you truly want is somebody who isn’t afraid to spill the tea, give some gossip, and really draw back the curtain of their celebrity lifestyle.’
Walsh’s Celebrity Big Brother housemates perhaps remember him less fondly. During the last few days, Walsh grew closer to the other housemates after quibbling that they were ‘supposed to be celebrities’. He promised to stay in touch and give them his number.
David Potts, who eventually won Celebrity Big Brother, has since confirmed he hasn’t heard from Louis once.
‘I’d actually be disappointed if he was responding,’ laughs AJ.
Will agrees: ‘Yeah, exactly, otherwise you’d think he was just faking the whole time.’
But no one divided opinion more than Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu. Just two years after winning Love Island, one of the biggest reality TV popularity contests, she left Celebrity Big Brother to boos and lost a huge chunk of her fanbase.
She’s since bounced back in full force, winning Love Island: All Stars, but left Celebrity Big Brother scorned and bitter, clashing with AJ and Will in her exit interview.
Asked if they felt Ekin-su was entitled to feel hard done by, they agreed: ‘No.’
‘Ekin-Su in Celebrity Big Brother was very different to the Ekin-Su who we saw on Love Island,’ says AJ.
‘I feel like there is a sincere fairness when myself and Will interview anybody. We are literally asking questions regarding the goings-on in the house as we have watched it.
‘Those things haven’t been edited into your body. Obviously, the show is a one-hour cut-down of a 24-hour filming cycle, but the misconception people have about Big Brother is the sound engineers and producers go in there and plant things, or they interact with housemates face to face.
‘They literally don’t be another human being out of the Big Brother house so it’s a very unique experience unlike any other reality show. If you’re going to do something in the Big Brother house and be questioned about it, that’s fair.’
Will adds: ‘In terms of if somebody could be edited fairly or unfairly there are literally checks and balances.
‘There is a legal team who whose job it is to make sure that everybody is actually being represented fairly because it’s a competition that people at home are voting on so they have to be presented with a fair representation of what has been happening in the house, otherwise the votes are null and void.

Late arrival: Danny Beard
‘I don’t know what it was like back in the day, but a huge amount of effort goes into making sure everybody is represented as accurately and fairly as possible.’
They both diplomatically agree, though: ‘She was an amazing housemate—we love everyone brave enough to enter the Celebrity Big Brother house.’
Tomorrow night, Celebrity Big Brother returns with a new batch of housemates about to be immortalised as Big Brother legends, an honour bestowed to anyone who walks into the iconic compound, whether they leave to boos or cheers.
At the time of our interview, a few weeks before the live launch, Will and AJ had no idea who would be entering the house.
‘I’d be lying if I sat here and said I didn’t want the biggest name,’ admits AJ. ‘But just out of curiosity. I want a celebrity I’ve never seen in this sort of scenario before.’
Well, AJ might have her wish, as The Sun revealed the leaked line-up that includes Oscar-nominated actor Mickey Rourke, hoping for another comeback 17 years after he starred in the critically acclaimed The Wrestler in 2008.
Goldie Hawn turned down a reported £1million, and Macy Gray reportedly pulled out at the ‘last minute’ just weeks after storming off The Masked Singer.
Other names on the ‘leaked’ list include EastEnders legend Patsy Palmer, chat show host Trisha Goddard, US reality star Jojo Siwa, and one-hit wonder and all-around lovely pop star Chesney Hawkes.
Celebrity Big Brother returns Monday night at 9pm on ITV1.

TVNoel Fielding’s career has seen him jump between comedy and working on one of the most comforting shows on TV, the Great British Bake Off.
The 51-year-old started his career in the public eye performing stand up comedy in the late 1990s, during which time he met Mighty Boosh collaborator Julian Barratt.
Their idea became a radio show in 2001, before going to be commissioned as a TV series and then a stage show.
During the 2000s, Noel also appeared in shows including Nathan Barley, The IT Crowd, AD/BC: A Rock Opera, and Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace.
He’s also been a guest on Never Mind the Buzzcocks and Richard Ayoade’s Travel Man series.

In 2017, Noel bagged his biggest presenting role to date – The Great British Bake Off – which he currently fronts alongside This Morning star Alison Hammond. There is also currently a series of Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up to Cancer specials airing.
However earlier this year it was announced that his show – The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin – in which he stars had been halted in the middle of season 2.
At the time it was announced production had stopped due to an issue regarding Noel’s ‘health’, while a source claimed that he said that he ‘can’t film anymore’.
But away from the screens what do we know about Noel, whose partner is radio DJ Lliana Bird, with whom he shares two children.
Noel was previously in a relationship with Robots in Disguise lead vocalist Dee Plume, who made minor appearances in The Mighty Boosh and in its live adaptations.
In 2010 he then began dating radio DJ Lliana Bird, who previously hosted a weekly show with Radio X.
She is also an author who has released the book The Mice Who Sing For Sex – a non-fiction book on all things bizarre and wonderful from the world of science – and the children’s book Baboo The Unusual Bee.
Liliana, 42, also has her own production company called Bird & Be and is the co-founder of the charities Choose Love and The Kindly Collective, which funds and supports grassroots charitable projects for women, kids and animals.
The couple reportedly met after she appeared in several episodes of The Mighty Boosh in 2010 and later had a brief cameo in Noel’s series Luxury Comedy as ‘Lady in car’ in 2014.
The couple are not married, but in 2018 announced they were expecting their first child together.
The couple have two daughters together; Dali – who was born in April 2018 and named after Noel’s favourite artist Salvador Dali and Iggy, who was born in August 2020.
Although they keep their children out of the public eye and off social media, Lliana does sometimes share photos of her eldest daughter’s artworks online.
Last year she also shared an insight into their home life.
Reminiscing about the births of her children and becoming a parent, Lliana spoke about how ‘magical’ a father Noel had become since welcoming their daughters.
‘He kind of makes the silliest little moments, he makes having breakfast a real moment,’ she said on the Happy Mum Happy Baby with Giovanna Fletcher podcast.
‘I think I’ve just really leaned into that and just going like, “This is amazing. We’re getting to have porridge and it’s funny, and it’s fun. And we’re wearing silly hats, and we’re dancing. And that’s okay.”‘
‘Maybe someone else’s kids are going to have a few more spoonfuls of porridge because it’s going to be quicker, they’re eating it properly, and digesting it properly. But, you know, my kids are having a lot of fun.’
Noel Fielding lives with his family in North London home, with their home nestled in a residential area on the corner of Hampstead Heath.
Although he’s rarely shared images of his house online, he’s offered fans glimpses over the years, including of his back garden after he once mowed the lawn.
Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up to Cancer continues on Sunday at 7.40pm on Channel 4.

GamingA reader reveals how his attempt to reignite his passion for video games has stalled because so many arcade games are hard to replicated 100% on consoles.
Five years ago, I wrote a feature with regards to my upcoming 50th birthday and how I solved the problem of reliving my youth by revisiting the classics using my PlayStation 3 and saving money on buying a cabinet or exploring the grey depths of emulation.
As I now rapidly approach my 55th birthday, the major downfall with my solution is that some of the classics just cannot be replicated and give me that same rush of nostalgia through my trusty old PlayStation 3.
That problem is that using the PlayStation 3 DualShock, or plugging my Mayflash Arcade stick into the console, fails to give the same experience as being in the arcade, due to some of the unique controller devices used to play many of the retro arcade games. So I made a list of all the games that cannot be emulated perfectly on a console:
Operation Wolf
Walking into an arcade and seeing this huge cabinet, with a mounted Uzi, for the first time in 1987 made this this is a must-play. Before games like Time Crisis and Virtua Cop, this early lightgun game, with the addition of a side button for grenades, was superb.
Sea Wolf
One of the first arcade titles I remember with a bespoke controller method was released in 1976. Players use a mounted periscope to pilot a submarine using side buttons to launch torpedoes at enemy vessels under the added pressure of a timer.
Dance Dance Revolution
Never really appealed to me as a player, but on its release in 1999 I always enjoyed watching others with much better coordination than myself. Yes, you can buy a mat for it at home, but it’s slippy and dodgy, and nothing can replace the full two-player cabinet with barriers to lean on.
Silent Scope
Using a mounted rifle, players need to physically change their position to allow a zoomed in view of a small portion of the screen from the sights. With the genius addition of night vision scopes this was guaranteed to cost me a fortune.
Golden Tee Golf
Trackballs were not unique to arcade games, on this title’s release in 1989, but what a superb addition using a trackball makes to arcade golf. You can buy this if you are lucky enough to find it as a Plug and Play title, but it still does not feel quite the same.
Spy Hunter
Many arcade games had fitted steering wheels to allow players to feel more immersed in a game, but Spy Hunter requires well-timed gear changes, smoke shield, oil spills, and missiles – without the best wheel made you would never make it to the boathouse!
Paperboy
This was released on many home systems including my beloved Commodore 64, but it will never replicate playing an arcade machine fitted with an actual bicycle handlebar; a game where you deliver papers with this controller should never have worked, but it was an absolute classic.
Tempest
One of the greatest arcade titles ever created. One of the first titles to use vector graphics, this must be played with the rotating controller to be truly appreciated.
Battlezone
One of the first truly 3D arcade games, using vector graphics, players hunt down enemy tanks and saucers using two controllers and a periscope – tough game even by 1980s standards.
This is by no means an exhaustive list and I look forward to being reminded of some blatant titles I have missed in the comments section!
As for many, the last few years have been tough, and I have felt myself going wibble and battling mental health issues. To this end I would like to thank Mrs Bullman for being there for me for nearly 35 years, don’t know what I would do without her.
She has gone above and beyond for my birthday this year and purchased me one glaring emission from the above titles:
The original vector graphics Atari Star Wars.
The 40th anniversary Arcade1Up is currently reduced on Amazon, and we will be building it tonight with a beer or two.
This includes The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi; all of these can be played legally through Antstream, but it just never feels right without the classic yolk.
Thank you for all your outstanding reviews, features, and everyone’s Inbox contributions.
Hopefully I will still be married after we put this thing together!

GamingA reader fears that the price of games on Nintendo Switch 2 will begin to seem cheap compared to GTA 6 and other next gen titles.
By now I assume everyone’s seen the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct and sadly the most memorable thing about it is the price. The console is okay, but the games are just unbelievably expensive. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is only £50 (still) but Mario Kart World is £75 for a physical copy, which is a ridiculously big jump, the likes of which I’ve never seen before.
I know you can get the console and game bundled together, which makes it half price, but that’s not really the point. If all the games are going to cost that much, or close to it, then I feel that I’ve just been priced out of the whole concept of gaming. Especially as this is just the tip of the iceberg.
We’ve all seen the rumours of GTA 6 costing £100, and I think you’d have to be very optimistic to think that’s not true, or that every other publisher isn’t waiting to charge the same. In the end, by the start of the next gen, Nintendo may end up being cheaper than the average once again.
I assume this is a response to games costing more to make nowadays but to be honest I’m not really interested in the explanation or any excuses from publishers. We are not living in a world where the average person can afford to spend £75 to £100 on a video game, that they may or may not like, and companies are insane if they think they can jack the prices up by that much and just have people shrug their shoulders and pay up.
All it’s going to do is push even more people towards free-to-play games and make it so that only a tiny, elite circle of games can charge full price, because nobody is going to be crazy enough to spend £100 on something that’s a risk.
Sequels will become the only games that are ever made and most games that aren’t free-to-play will be indie – assuming they don’t raise their prices as well, which they probably will.
What’s especially upsetting about all this is that publishers probably don’t see it as a bad thing at all. As long as they make the same amount of money, or more, they don’t care if the number of triple-A games being made plumets. They don’t care about the health of the games industry, and they certainly don’t care about making art.
They’d be quite happy if all that gaming was, was a half dozen free online shooters and all their money came from pointless cosmetics. Nintendo aren’t that bad yet, but I’m already disturbed by the strange emphasis on online multiplayer in the Direct, which is absolutely not what I want from them as a company.
I feel like this is the end. I’ve been gaming for 30 years or more and always been excited about it, but this generation has really sapped my enthusiasm. I had hoped that the reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2 would change all that but all it’s done is accelerate the rot.
I can guarantee you I’ll never buy a PlayStation 6 and while I may continue to play indie games on Switch 1, I really can’t see myself continuing on as I have. Maybe it’s not anyone’s fault in particular, maybe this was always going to be the way video games ended, once they got so expensive to make, but I find it all very depressing.
Nintendo may only be reacting to the reality of things today but because their games never reduce in price I can’t even hope to pick them up in a year or two when they’re cheaper. I think I’m done, retro games and indie titles will have to be the future of gaming for me.
