TVI don’t think anyone could have imagined quite how important Chris Hughes would be in the Celebrity Big Brother house.
I certainly didn’t.
On Monday night, the former Love Island star walked through the iconic CBB double doors alongside bonafide showbiz royalty such as EastEnders icon Patsy Palmer, chat show legend Trisha Goddard and, as if you haven’t heard by now, Oscar-nominated actor Mickey Rourke.
Rourke’s addition to the spectacular line-up was inevitably going to grab all of the attention but few could have anticipated what would unfold during his first 24 hours locked inside a reality TV compound.
At the live launch, during the 10 second walk from his car to the house, he managed to turn the crowd’s cheers to boos when he inappropriately grabbed host AJ Odudu.
Celebrity Big Brother has built its reputation on creating some of the most uncomfortable moments known to man, but this was another level of painful watching.
Understandably, there were calls to remove him from the house before he’d even made it down the stairs and met his housemates.
The next morning, he reduced LGBTQ+ housemate Jojo Siwa – 51 years his junior – to tears with wildly inappropriate remarks about her sexuality and relationship with partner Kath Ebbs.
With thousands of members from all over the world, our vibrant LGBTQ+ WhatsApp channel is a hub for all the latest news and important issues that face the LGBTQ+ community.

He told her: ‘If I stay longer than four days, you won’t be gay anymore.’
The actor then said to Hughes: ‘I’m going to vote out the lesbian real quick.’
Rourke also joked that he needed a ‘fag’ and pointed to Siwa, saying: ‘I’m not talking about you.’
At this point, it’s clear Rourke should be removed from the Celebrity Big Brother house at the very least for his own well-being, let alone for the sake of others.

As awful as the exchange was to watch, particularly seeing a young LGBTQ+ woman clearly devastated and hurt in an environment she should feel safe, the aftermath was actually quite powerful, largely because of Hughes, the unexpected ally few people, including me, would have expected to step up.
As Rourke walked away blissfully unaware of the hurt he’d caused, Hughes’ eyes darted straight to Siwa with genuine care and concern and walked over to check she was OK.
She acknowledged: ’What I felt just then was you had my back when I’ve known you for 24 hours and you have no reason to have my back.’
Hughes held her hand, before she collapsed in his arms and sobbed as he urged her to let it all out.
No one else came to her rescue, but Hughes was there in a flash.
And while the other housemates watching on were rendered speechless, Hughes confronted Rourke head on to calmly explain why, on so many levels, those remarks were not acceptable.
Many people will call themselves an ally because they have gay friends or enjoyed an episode of Drag Race, but it’s rarer than it should be for straight people – particularly straight men – to actually call out homophobic behaviour when they see it.
Rourke, given his celebrity status, is also arguably in the Celebrity Big Brother house on a different playing field.
You can see most housemates don’t know how to behave around him because while his comments and anti-social behaviours clearly make them shudder, he is still, at the end of the day, Hollywood icon Mickey Rourke.
Sadly, there is a lot of power in celebrity, particularly for others who have spent their lives chasing stardom and are in many ways defined by it.
Hughes was the first to prove he is brave enough to stand up to said power, and I hope – and expect – others might now follow his lead.
Before Hughes entered the house, once the line-up was leaked, I and some female friends admitted we were worried Celebrity Big Brother could expose a toxic side to Hughes, which was clearly so unbelievably wrong it’s embarrassing to recall that conversation now.
But when you’re so used to being disappointed in straight men, it’s a fair assumption.
Watching Hughes so effectively show his allyship, personally, couldn’t come at a better time. He was so well-versed and respectful about the LGBTQ+ community, he made it look effortless – which, ideally, it should be.
Straight men, fairly or unfairly, are getting a bad rap, in part due to the may ways women and LGBTQ+ people are made to feel uncomfortable with very real daily interactions with them, or what bile is spouted out and celebrated by the loudest men on social media.
Donald Trump is quite literally the most powerful man in the world and couldn’t be further from being an ally to LGBTQ+ or women.
Only marginally less impactful is Elon Musk, who has cut all ties with his trans daughter, and turned X into a cesspit of virtual hate crimes towards pretty much any marginalised community.
Then there’s Andrew Tate – a former Big Brother contestant – who is manipulating young boys and men in ways beyond which anyone could have predicted, steering them into a future of misogyny and hatred towards women and LGBTQ+ people.
All three hold power in different ways but equally they are shaping the landscape and idea of what it means to be a straight man in 2025, and how the rest of us perceive them.
I’ve spent my entire adulthood surrounded by brilliant straight men who have held me up and protected me from homophobia. They celebrate their girlfriends, wives and female friends like they should be and are the best role models to the young boys they’re going to raise.
But over the last decade I’ve still become increasingly fearful when I meet a straight men for the first time because it is the worst of them making the biggest noise and running the world.
Hughes isn’t just a crucial ally in the Celebrity Big Brother house, it is so deeply important for all of us watching to see how excellent straight men can be.
As a gay man, I was so moved to see his sincere care for Siwa when she was in pain. He got it and knew what he had to do.
Our young boys are being warped by the Andrew Tates of the world and as Netflix’s Adolescence showed, we should be terrified – more than we have been until now.
But to counter Tate and others like him, we need more fantastic male role models for boys to look up to instead.
If Tate, Musk and Trump can build brands by being hateful, imagine what Hughes can achieve by being brave and kind.
I hope we see him achieve incredible things when he leaves the Celebrity Big Brother house as a true ally of the LGBTQ + community, which has taken me by surprise.
Perhaps the best part of it all, given how easily it came to him, is that I don’t think he’ll even realise how impactful he’s been – the fundamental essence of a true ally.
Celebrity Big Brother airs weeknights at 9pm on ITV1.

Netflix viewers can’t get enough of a new Korean crime thriller praised for its ‘crazy twists’ and ‘masterful acting’.
The six-part K-drama, starring Lee He-jun, Squid Game star Park Hae-soo, and Shin Min-a, is based on a webtoon by Choi See-Hun with the adaptation directed by Lee Il-hyung.
The synopsis reads: ‘When a man goes to extremes to repay a dangerous loan shark, it sparks a chain of tragic events that connects a group of people in unexpected ways. What will it take to end the domino effect of everyone’s bad deeds?’
And follows a ‘ne’er-do-well whose fate becomes tied to ruthless criminals out for blood — and a few innocent people who get caught up in a web of questionable decisions.’
And it is already being widely praised for its electric plot and masterclass acting.

‘Finished Karma in a day. what a fun wild ride! lots of plot twists and turns but never confusing. storyline is so gripping that I just had to get to the end asap. what goes around, comes around has never been so on point. 10/10 for me,’ poppycoffee88 wrote on X.
‘I just finished it. Wow, it’s a masterpiece!!! The whole cast is incredibly talented! I love them!!! It’s non-stop, trust me. I hope Karma gets all the recognition it deserves,’ lhracha28 added.
‘The plot twists were executed so flawlessly and felt incredibly balanced throughout,’ te3_tia teased.
‘It was thrilling from start to end, if you want to watch a good, short, thrilling show with a satisfying ending this is for you, it only has 6 episodes & everything from plot to acting is serving,’ daisy_dramas agreed.
‘This show is one of the most mind-blowing thrillers I’ve ever watched. Every episode leaves you speechless. Highly recommend!’ fatumayattani echoed.
‘Karma was yet another crazy K-drama from Netflix. Disturbing & satisfying all at once. Stellar cast, stellar performances, brilliant twists & turns. An insane dance between consequences and actions. What goes around comes back around has never been this wild,’ Ramasscreen declared.
The show has also landed a respectable 80% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.
‘Karma delivers on mystery and intrigue from beginning to end. While only six episodes long, it’s among the most satisfying watches of 2025,’ the FandomWire review reads.
Although Decider warns that the complex nature of the plots can sometimes let it down, adding: ‘Karma has the potential to be a fine series with intertwining plots, but it could also be an exercise in frustration, depending on how long those plots take to develop.’
In an interview with Korea JoongAng Daily, Park (who plays the mystery character The Witness), said: ‘I’m very grateful for the praise, but really, the story has so much strength on its own, and it’s really thanks to Lee’s direction and chemistry with the other actors that allowed the character to change naturally.
‘There’s a wide range to him, and I think people responded to that.’
And reflected on how unique his enigmatic character is.
‘You don’t often get a chance to play someone who shifts this much in one story. It was exciting to step into a character who doesn’t follow rules and crosses lines.’
And if Karma gets you hooked, there are plenty more K-dramas on Netflix to sink your teeth into from heartfelt romances to tense thrillers including All of Us Are Dead, Hellbound and Love Next Door, to name a few.
Karma is available to stream on Netflix now.

Mickey Rourke appears to have not learned his lesson on Celebrity Big Brother as he attempts to break another rule.
The Sin City actor, 72, has been reprimanded by ITV over his homophobic remarks to fellow housemate Jojo Siwa, 21, and was previously called out for his ‘creepy’ behaviour towards AJ Odudu.
However, it seems a leopard doesn’t change its spots as on tonight’s episode, Rourke tries to defy Celebrity Big Brother again.
His bid to disobey the rules happens after the housemates are ordered to choose one of their co-stars to face the first public eviction.
However, there is a twist as Siwa is granted the ‘Killer Nomination Power’, which grants her the ability to pick one housemate who will face the public vote.
Unsurprisingly, the Karma singer makes the ‘pretty easy’ decision to choose Rourke, citing his ‘hurtful’ comments.
On Celebrity Big Brother 2025, Hollywood actor Mickey Rourke sparked uproar with homophobic comments that he made towards internet sensation JoJo Siwa.
Speaking in the House, Rourke, 72, asked Siwa, 21: ‘So do you like girls or boys?’
‘Me? Girls,’ Siwa answered, to which Rourke responded: ‘I know, I could tell.’
After the dancer shared that her partner is non-binary, the housemates who were in the garden started to talk about the eviction due to take place that week on Friday night.
‘If I stay longer than four days, you won’t be gay anymore,’ Rourke remarked, as Siwa said back to him: ‘I can guarantee I will still be gay and I will still be in a very happy relationship.’
‘I’ll tie you up,’ The Wrestler actor replied.
‘I can promise you that won’t happen,’ Siwa stated. ‘I dare you to try, you’ll be the one tied up.’
Rourke then spoke to some other housemates, asking about the process of voting out other contestants on Celebrity Big Brother.
‘I’m going to vote the lesbian out real quick,’ he said, as Siwa – who was lying on a sun lounger – turned her head towards him and declared: ‘That’s homophobic.’
‘Eh?’ Rourke asked, as Siwa continued: ‘That’s homophobic if that was your reasoning.’
After the actor repeated that he was going to ‘vote the lesbian out’, he then exclaimed: ‘I need a fag’ in reference to wanting a cigarette.
However, he then gestured towards Siwa and quipped: ‘Not talking to you,’ seemingly referencing the f word that’s used as an anti-gay slur.
Love Island star Chris Hughes, who was sitting next to Rourke, told him: ‘You can’t say that Mickey,’ while Siwa kept her composure and said: ‘One breath at a time troops, one breath at a time.’
After Hughes repeated his warning to Rourke, the actor insisted that he had been talking about a cigarette before walking off on his own.
The reality TV star went over to check on Siwa, consoling her as she cried in his arms over the upset. At the same time, Rourke was called to the Diary Room, where he received a formal warning for his remarks.
Later on inside the lounge, Rourke went over to Siwa as he told her: ‘I want to apologise,’ telling her that he has a ‘bad habit of having a short fuse’.
‘I don’t mean nothing by it. Ok sorry,’ he said as he shook her hand, while she told him that she appreciated his apology.
Rourke’s homophobic comments towards Siwa happened a day after he was criticised for touching presenter AJ Odudu ‘inappropriately’ on stage.
She adds that his eviction would be the ‘best case scenario for me.’
But when Rourke comes to nominate a housemate in the Diary Room, he refuses, breaching one of Celebrity Big Brother’s rules.
He explains: ‘I choose not to evict anyone. I refuse to do that. I will not pick two people to toss off the shelf.’
Viewers will have to tune in to see if Rourke complies.
Last night, Rourke told Siwa that she ‘won’t be gay anymore’ after his company for four days, and also shared his plans to ‘vote out the lesbian real quick.’
The Barfly actor also told Siwa he ‘wasnt talking to her’ when he expressed his desire for a ‘fag’, a slur that can also mean cigarette.
Celebrity Big Brother gave Rourke a formal warning and reminded him of the show’s expectation for appropriate behaviour.
Rouke apologised to Siwa after the housemates attempted ‘to help him understand why his comments were offensive.’
He said: ‘I want to apologise. I’ve got a habit of having a short fuse. And I don’t mean nothing by it. I do mean it [sorry]. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t say it to you.’
However, Siwa’s partner Kath Ebbs later hit out at Rourke for his comments that were ‘deeply rooted in misogyny and violence.’
They said there were ‘so many layers’ to Rourke’s interactions with Siwa that made them feel ‘sick to my stomach.’
Before entering the Celebrity Big Brother house, Rourke grabbed Odudu and proceeded to pull her into him after twirling her around.
Complimenting the TV presenter’s appearance, he then leaned back and admired her behind.
Viewers called Rourke’s behaviour ‘creepy’ and ‘vile.’
A Big Brother spokesperson previously told Metro: ‘All Housemates receive Respect and Inclusion training and an extensive briefing from the Big Brother Senior team to prepare them for living in the House and to set out Big Brother’s expectation for appropriate behaviour and language.
Celebrity Big Brother continues tonight at 9pm on ITV and ITVX.

After a 26-year wait, fans can finally watch the trailer for the reboot of the trailblazing BBC series, Walking With Dinosaurs.
The BBC factual drama originally aired in 1999 and was narrated by Kenneth Brannagh as each episode took the audience on a dramatic odyssey to uncover the vast lives of this beloved pre-historic species.
Now, alongside the trailer, the BBC has confirmed the narrator of the new six-part series will be the award-winning actor Bertie Carvel known for his starring turns in Dalgliesh, Doctor Foster and The Crown as well as scoring multiple Oliviers and a Tony award.
The 60-second trailer for the ‘ultimate dinosaur show’ offers a majestic sweep of the mountainous forests in Alberta to the red rock canyons of Utah as viewers step back in time once more ‘to witness the incredible life stories of these long-lost giants.’
And we’re in for a treat with a selection of jaw-dropping dinosaurs that will leave you bewitched by their impressive worlds.
As intriguingly explained by the BBC: ‘These include a Spinosaurus – the largest carnivorous dinosaur to ever walk the earth – roaming the rivers of ancient Morocco; a youthful Triceratops battling a ravenous T. rex in North America; and a lonely giant Lusotitan risking it all for a love in Portugal.’
And, with all the ‘cutting edge’ scientific developments from the past two decades, we’ll be getting our most accurate glimpse ever into how dinosaurs truly ‘lived, hunted, fought and died’ all those eons ago with ‘state of the art visual effects’.
‘I am beyond thrilled to be a part of this exciting new reimagining of Walking With Dinosaurs.
‘The BBC is a world-leader in creating groundbreaking and innovative science programming which I’ve admired all my life, so I’m incredibly excited to be a part of the team bringing the stories of these prehistoric creatures to life,’ Bertie said in a statement.
Meanwhile Jack Bootle,Senior Head of Specialist Factual Commissioning, teased that ‘the true story is more dramatic, intense, and surprising than anything Hollywood could dream up.’
He added: ‘Using the latest science and stunning visuals, we’re bringing their world to life like never before.’
Andrew Cohen, Executive Producer, BBC Studios Science Unit echoed: ‘We are incredibly excited to be bringing Walking With Dinosaurs to a whole new generation of audiences around the world.
‘Brought to life with the very latest cutting-edge science, world class VFX and the world’s best science storytellers, this is the ultimate dinosaur show.’
The 1999 series was watched by an incredible 15 million viewers across the UK, cementing it as one of the most-watched science programmes on British TV in the 20th century.
And fans have previously expressed their sheer excitement at this ‘awe-inspiring’ reimagining.
‘I’m actually close to tears walking with dinosaurs means so much to me. I’m thrilled a new generation will be able to sit in wonder in front of their screens and be educated and awed like I was,’ one fan Phillip said at the time.
‘Walking with dinosaurs was one of those shows I would watch on repeat forever. It really got me hooked on dinosaurs for good,’ another fan, Keyfeathers echoed.
The original series of Walking With Dinosaurs is available to watch on BBC iPlayer. The Walking With Dinosaurs reboot will arrive on BBC One and BBC iPlayer this spring.

GamingAfter saying Switch 2 Edition games won’t have native Switch 2 versions, another statement from Nintendo now says the exact opposite.
Earlier this week, a brouhaha kicked off when it was reported that physical versions of Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games (upgraded re-releases of Switch 1 games) technically didn’t exist.
According to a Nintendo customer support representative, physical copies come with the Switch 1 version and a download code for the upgrade. This quickly garnered a lot of outrage from fans and even accusations of false advertising.
However, a new statement from Nintendo says the exact opposite and yet there’s still uncertainty around the issue and a number of other important details from last week’s Nintendo Direct.
When we contacted Nintendo UK this week, for clarification on Switch 2 Edition games, they were unable to either confirm or deny whether physical Switch 2 Edition games would just be the Switch 1 versions plus a download code or an actual Switch 2 cartridge.
Australian outlet Vooks received a very different and more concrete answer, presumably from Nintendo Australia: ‘Physical versions of Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games will include the original Nintendo Switch game and its upgrade pack all on the same game card (i.e. they are exclusively Nintendo Switch 2 game cards, with no download code).’
They also added, ‘Some publishers may release Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games as download codes in physical packaging, with no game card.’ Although so far no third party Switch 2 Edition games have been announced.
Taken at face value, physical Switch 2 Editions published by Nintendo will have the complete package on the cartridge, with no additional download required.
However, there’s no obvious reason to think that Nintendo Australia are correct and the support representative isn’t, especially as the wording on the box cover is very ambiguous. Nintendo UK’s inability to either confirm or deny the situation also suggests that the matter is far from settled.
Why Nintendo didn’t just make the situation clear from the start, or at least once the controversary began, is a mystery. If Nintendo Australia know what’s going on why doesn’t everyone else, and if Nintendo Australia is wrong why hasn’t a more senior division clarified the situation?
It may be that the rules are different depending on the region, but that would be very strange. What’s more likely is that most regions do not know, or have been told not to say, and either Australia is guessing or is speaking out of turn (from Nintendo of Japan’s point of view).
This isn’t the only example of Nintendo withholding information and inspiring wild speculation. Nintendo never revealed how much Switch 2 games cost during last week’s showcase, which left everyone scouring the internet for information and for a time many American fans mistakenly believed the games would cost as much as $90, based on a direct conversion of the European prices.
At the time of writing, only two Switch 2 exclusives have official UK prices: Mario Kart World at £74.99 physically and £66.99 digitally, and Donkey Kong Bananza at £66.99 physically and £58.99 digitally.
At the same time as we asked about the Switch 2 Editions we asked Nintendo about the price of Welcome Tour (which has been announced for other regions), Drag X Drive, and other titles but were told simply, ‘We don’t have anything to announce on that topic.’
Switch 2 Editions will cost £66.99 physically, but there’s no clue how much they will be digitally or what the upgrade cost is in the UK (we also asked about that). In the US, the two Legend Of Zelda games cost $10 each to upgrade, which would be about £8 each in the UK, but that’s only an estimation.
Considering Nintendo has talked a lot about embracing variable pricing for its games, it’s assumed that some games, like Kirby: Air Riders and the new Hyrule Warriors, will cost less – perhaps around £50. If that’s true it would make it clearer that Mario Kart World is something of an exceptional case, but because Nintendo won’t reveal the other prices nobody knows for sure.
Even things like the new wireless GameCube controller haven’t been thoroughly explained. Only recently was it discovered that the fine print for its announcement mentions that it’s only compatible with GameCube games on the Nintendo Switch Online service and thus can’t be used with Switch 2 games.
It’s possible this is inaccurate, since Nintendo has said the same thing about previous retro controllers, which did turn out to work, but that only makes things worse.
Between a lack of specific details (Nintendo didn’t even say how much the console cost during the showcase) and conflicting statements, the only thing that’s clear is that Nintendo has fumbled the ball and turned what should have been an exciting start to its next generation into an aggravating slog of ambiguous statements and educated guesses.

Amazon Prime Video subscribers can’t speak highly enough of an ‘intoxicating’ new action horror fronted by a Hollywood legend.
Starring Kevin Bacon, The Bondsman sees the Golden Globe winner portraying murdered bounty hunter Hub Halloran.
Yes, you read that correctly—murdered.
Resurrected by the Devil, he’s back from beyond the grave with a second chance at life, love… and his music career.
Things take a turn, however, when Hub’s entrusted with a new role: sending back demons who have busted out of Hell.
In the process, however, he discovers how his own sinful life got him condemned.
The series premiered on April 3, with other cast members including Jennifer Nettles as Maryanne, Beth Grant as Kitty, Damon Herriman as Lucky, Maxwell Jenkins as Cade, and Jolene Purdy as Midge.
Since then it has stormed up the Amazon charts, and is currently number two after Last One Laughing in the UK.
Upon discovering the rather gory new show, fans have taken to X with their reviews.
While the response has generally been mixed thus far, it seems those who love it truly can’t get enough and have praised Bacon’s ‘incredible comeback.’
Describing it as ‘absurdly fun’, @RamasScreen wrote: ‘THE BONDSMAN was gory, gnarly and intoxicating. It’s “Brimstone” meets “Ash Vs. Evil Dead” and I enjoyed every minute of it. Kevin Bacon totally kicked ass. A delightful blend of gut-wrenching tension, apocalyptic chaos and blood-squirting action.’
Heaping equal praise on Bacon’s co-star, Grant, @TheJosieMarie wrote: ‘If you love the humor and gore of ZOMBIELAND, you’ll devour THE BONDSMAN, starring Kevin Bacon. Half-hour comedy goodness with a tremendous duo at the forefront.’
@klhicks912 declared: ‘Watched the first season in one day and I need another season’.
Meanwhile, @caseymcknew hailed it as ‘one of the best series I’ve seen this year’, stating it’s ‘great’ to have Bacon back on the screen.
Over on review site Rotten Tomatoes, The Bondsman debuted with a 74% score from audiences, while positive top critics only just secured a majority with 57%.
It has an average rating of 5.6 out of 10, with some streamers claiming the supernatural show is ‘nothing new’.
But it’s clear there’s still plenty of appetite for more, and given that the first season ends on a cliffhanger, Bacon and co. are determined to deliver the goods.
‘All I can say is I have a plan,’ showrunner Erik Oleson told TV Insider.
‘We’ve got some really fun stuff planned, depending on whether or not the show is able to [return].’
In fact, the dramatic ending was written on purpose to pile pressure on Amazon to green-light a season 2.
‘I made it intentionally difficult for Amazon to not give us season 2 by ending it the way I did, because I’m evil.’
As for Bacon himself, the lead star, 66, has confirmed conversations are already being had about another outing.
‘We’ve already started to talk about it,’ he revealed when asked about a possible season 2, predicting plenty of ‘interesting’ action if given the chance to explore Halloran’s relationship with Maryanne.
A version of this article was first published on April 5.

TVThe Simpsons character Apu Nahasapeemapetilon has been silent for nearly a decade after being criticised for perpetuating harmful stereotypes.
The Indian convenience store worker is considered racially insensitive, not least because he was voiced by a white man, Hank Azaria, 60.
In 2017, Apu became the centre of a documentary, The Problem with Apu, which laid bare the harm his characterisation was causing.
Since then, the character has not said a word on The Simpsons.
The last time Apu spoke was the Game of Thrones parody The Serfsons, which aired in October 2017, the month before The Problem with Apu was released.
In an interview on Pablo Torre Finds Out, Azaria said The Simpsons staffers all ‘froze’ after watching the documentary and started rethinking Apu.

});
He said: ‘It wasn’t like, “Well, let me take a week and look into this.” It was probably two or three years because we all froze at The Simpsons. We had no idea what to do. The character stopped saying anything, and it became a deep dive into, “Well, is this racist? Does Hollywood have a tradition of doing this? In one way or another, am I a part of that?”‘
Azaria ultimately concluded that Apu was damaging.
He continued: ‘Honestly, at first, I thought, “Let me look into this, and then I’ll go back to doing the voice,” and say, “I understand, but I’m going to keep doing this.” I was surprised myself that I came down on, “No, I think I’m participating in a harm here.”‘
Azaria said one of the driving forces behind his decision was the name Apu becoming a slur.
He explained: ‘The main thing was when hate crimes were perpetrated against Southern Asian people, a lot of times, they were just called “Apu” which became a slur when convenience store guys were stabbed, shot, or robbed, especially when guys were more in the stereotypical professions like taxi drivers. They were hated on physically and called “Apu.”‘
In 2021, Azaria apologised for voicing Apu on Dax Shepherd’s Armchair Expert podcast, external, the actor said: ‘Part of me feels like I need to go around to every single Indian person in this country and personally apologise.’
The same year, The Simpsons creator Matt Groening admitted that the long-running cartoon needed revamping.
He told BBC Radio One: ‘Bigotry and racism are still an incredible problem and it’s good to finally go for more equality and representation.’
Groening added: ‘If it’s an Indian character, Latin character or Black character, please let’s have that person voice the character.
‘It’s more authentic, they might also bring their experience of their culture to it – and let’s not take away jobs from people who don’t have enough.’
The Simpsons is available to stream on Disney Plus.

TVGavin and Stacey may be over but that’s not stopped one cast member from plotting a spin-off that could ‘double the BBC’s money’
The beloved series – which followed the lives of two families brought together by the unlikely relationship between Gavin Shipman (Mathew Horne) and Stacey West (Joanna Page) – returned for one last episode on Christmas Day last year.
More than 19 million people sat down to watch Smithy (James Corden) and Nessa (Ruth Jones) finally tie the knot over the festive period, making it the most-watched scripted show in the UK across all broadcasters since records began in 2002 with 12.3m viewers taking a break from their turkey to tune in on Christmas Day.
Unsurprisingly, there have been rumours of a continuation or reboot of some kind ever since the finale broke records, and according to Larry Lamb – who plays Gavin’s lovable dad, Mick Shipman – is the one leading the charge.
Lamb, 77, claims to have told BBC Director-general Tim Davie to ‘take the show, reorganise all the contracts and put it in the cinema’.
‘You’d have 35m people going to see it,’ Lamb told The Times ahead of the release of his novel All Wrapped Up. ‘You’d make all the money over again.’

var placeholder = container.querySelector(‘.metro-video-player__up-next-placeholder’);
container.removeChild(placeholder);
container.classList.add(‘metro-video-player–related-videos-loaded’);
});
Before you start getting excited about your next trip to Barry Island, though, Lamb isn’t sure if Davie was entirely convinced by the idea.
‘Well, he’s the boss of the BBC,’ Lamb continued. ‘You don’t give the game away, do you? From the look on his face, it was either: “That’s not a bad idea,” or “I wish these people would stop trying to do my job for me. They can barely do their own.”’
This isn’t the first time Lamb has hinted about Gavin and Stacey continuing beyond the finale.
While talking to the Radio Times ahead of the Christmas special the star said: ‘I don’t think the BBC will ever kill the goose that laid the golden egg,’ and when pressed on if that meant we might see more of the Shipman-West family in the future he teased, ‘Who knows?’
Sadly, two people who would know are the show’s co-creators Corden and Jones, and they have been clear that the show could never return for more episodes.
Jones admitted during the Gavin & Stacey: A Fond Farewell documentary that aired after the finale that it comes down to Smithy and Nessa.
‘When Smithy and Nessa got together, that really is the end, because we can never see them actually together,’ Jones said. ‘Seeing Smithy put the bins out? It just won’t work.’
Fans (mostly) agree with Jones as well. On the Gavin and Stacey page on Reddit, a thread discussing a hypothetical spin-off was met with skepticism.
Indigo-Waterfall expressed pessimism about the idea of a spin-off, saying that the show ‘ended on a good note’. While Icy_Sentence_4130 added: ‘I don’t think we need anything else tbh. It ended perfectly.’
That said, one idea that fans did seem excited about was a new show all about Nessa and her weird and wonderful life before settling on Barry Island. So, move over Young Sheldon; it’s time for Young Nessa.
Gavin and Stacey is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.

FilmHorror fans are in for a treat after Netflix added an extended cut of a blockbuster 2018 horror film, complete with plenty of extra gore.
A massive hit upon release, after earning $95.3million (£73.9m) worldwide on a budget of just $3.5m (£2.7m), Truth or Dare comes from acclaimed genre producer Blumhouse.
The movie was toned down when initially released so Truth or Dare could reach a younger audience with a PG-13 rating in the US, which rankled some fans who were anticipating more gruesome carnage.
But now, if you’re a Netflix subscriber in the UK, your wish has been granted with a special extended director’s cut version of the supernatural horror.
The synopsis teases on the streamer: ‘Dark fears and sinister forces collide when friends play a twisted game of Truth or Dare in this extended version of the Blumhouse thriller.’

And indeed the stakes have never been higher as once the game starts, it awakens something evil which forces the friends to share dark secrets and confront their deepest fears.
The rules are simple but wicked — tell the truth or die, do the dare or die, and if you stop playing, you die.
Truth or Dare, starring The Hating Game’s Lucy Hale, Tyler Posey and Violett Beane, was directed by Kick Ass 2 filmmaker Jeff Wadlow, who co-wrote it alongside Michael Reisz, Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach.
‘I think this is my fave horror movie. I watched it at 4am and I don’t get scared easily but this freaked the frick out of me,’ shared fan Manu Misra in a five-star review on Google.
‘Genuinely LOVED the movie. This movie kept me stuck to my seat!’ shared Zarifa Fatima, while Rhea Das added: ‘It made me crawl in my skin because it was so uncomfortable to see, and a good type of frightening for me.’
‘I only watched it coz Tyler Posey was in it, but I wasn’t disappointed. And that ending, I DID NOT SEE IT COMING!!!!’ enthused Lucky Shaz.
However, Truth or Dare was not met with a positive reaction from critics earning a dismal score of just 15% from professional reviews.
‘Truth or Dare breaks one of the cardinal rules of preposterous plots, it never goes all the way,’ complained Entertainment Voice’s review, while Linda Cook for Quad City Times added: ‘I dare you to tell me this isn’t a Final Destination rip-off.’
It was also branded ‘a PG-13 dud whose early promise quickly devolves into unscary situations’ while Us Weekly suggested: ‘As a scary movie, Truth or Dare is about as frightening as a slip on a banana peel.’
But this version on Netflix of course has those extra thrills and jump scares to entertain viewers.
Truth and Dare’s success also saw a potential meta sequel lined up by Blumhouse and written, in which the film’s cast played themselves – like 1994 Freddy Krueger sequel, Wes Craven’s New Nightmare.
‘They had become great friends and were going on trips together, hanging out in Big Bear,’ Wadlow told Variety in February 2024.
‘They had this idea – wouldn’t it be funny if Truth or Dare happened to us while we were on vacation together, the actors? The joke became that the sequel should be called Truth or Big Bear. I thought that was kind of a brilliant idea.’
Sadly, it was later cancelled due to the complications of trying to shoot during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare: Extended Director’s Cut is streaming now on Netflix in the UK.

JoJo Siwa’s partner Kath Ebbs has said they feel ‘sick to their stomach’ over vile homophobic remarks made by Mickey Rourke.
There have been calls for ITV to axe the Sin City actor, 72, after he told Siwa, 21, she ‘won’t be gay anymore’ after his company for four days.
After the Karma singer pushed back against his offensive comments, Rourke told Chris Hughes his plans to ‘vote out the lesbian real quick.’
The Barfly actor also told Siwa he ‘wasnt talking to her’ when he expressed his desire for a ‘fag’, a slur that can also mean cigarette.
It’s not the only time Rourke’s behaviour has come under fire after he repeatedly grabbed and acted inappropriately towards host AJ Odudu.
On Instagram, Ebbs told Rourke he ‘looked like a f**king foot’ and said his comments were ‘rooted in misogyny and violence’.
They said: ‘When [Siwa] shuts him down, he goes, “I’m going to get rid of you”, which is rooted in misogyny. If men deem you unf**kable, then they have no use for you.
‘If the male gaze is not a part of this situation, and I have no power over you sexually, which also, no offense Mickey, you look like a f**king foot, so you don’t stand a chance with anyone anyway, because you’re a f**cking loser, then he’s like I’m going to bully you, you’re not going to play into my creepy jokes, then I’m going to bully you and say that I don’t want you here.’
Ebbs said there were ‘so many layers’ to Rourke’s interactions with Siwa that made them feel ‘sick to my stomach.’
On Celebrity Big Brother, Rourke was given a formal warning and was reminded of the show’s expectation for appropriate behaviour.
Ebbs said they welcomed the warning but remained concerned by Rourke’s ‘dangerous, dangerous language.’
They continued: ‘I would not want to be alone in a room with him and wouldn’t want anyone to be alone in a room with him.’
However, Ebbs contested Rourke’s ‘short fuse’ defense, saying: ‘You revealed yourself and the way you really think about people and about women. And you feel a little bit ashamed as you got called out for it on a TV show.
‘Instead, read a book. Interrogate your behavior and think about if you had a daughter or a sister or someone you really loved who is a woman. Would you leave them alone in a room with you?’
A Big Brother spokesperson told Metro: ‘All Housemates receive Respect and Inclusion training and an extensive briefing from the Big Brother Senior team to prepare them for living in the House and to set out Big Brother’s expectation for appropriate behaviour and language.
‘Housemates are monitored 24 hours a day and instances of inappropriate behaviour are dealt with appropriately and timely.’
Metro has also reached out to Rourke’s rep and lawyer for comment.
On X, Rourke’s behaviour has outraged fans, with Jacob saying: ‘Mickey is such a vile man…just remove him from the house.’
Echoing their sentiment, Hannah shared: ‘He has shown absolutely no remorse whatsoever, vile behaviour from Mickey.’
Crystal added: ‘Big Brother have a duty of care and therefore Mickey making them comments should’ve resulted in him being removed. A formal warning is not good enough.’
Ebbs is an Australian actor, writer, presenter and content creator.
The couple went public in January this year, with Siwa saying she was ‘so happy’ and in a ‘very mature relationship’.
‘It’s taught me so much about life. It’s taught me so much about love and respect, and it’s a beautiful thing,’ she told People.
Celebrity Big Brother continues tonight at 9pm on ITV and ITVX.
