GamingA reader explains why he hasn’t bought a Nintendo console since the N64 days and why it’s the Switch 2 that is going to pull him back in, despite its controversies.
We’ve predictably had an influx of negative views on Nintendo’s pricing policy so, for balance, I feel compelled to write about why I’m excited for Switch 2. Therefore, to the three people about to read a positive article, allow me to share my thoughts. Note to GC, we’re going to need a hyperbolic headline to attract some traffic!
Before I commence my convincing argument, I have a disclaimer. I haven’t purchased a Nintendo console since the N64. That’s right, I was one of those fools paying £70 for cartridges back in the ‘90s. Here we go, pull up a sandbag, you don’t know you’re born rhetoric.
Technically speaking, the Wii is the last Nintendo console I bought, as a gift for the in-laws – which they still use to this day. Saying they still use it is like Trigger’s broom from Only Fools and Horses. They had to replace the console and Wii-motes several times! But I still take the win when it comes to the mother-in-law.
Over the years, I have almost pulled the trigger on a Nintendo console several times. For what seems like years, I was waiting on the infamous Switch Pro console that never materialised. I can already see the comment, ‘Switch 2 is a Switch Pro, so there!’
Anyhow, I shall reap the rewards of my inexcusable patience. I will be the equivalent of a PlayStation 5 owner that hasn’t played The Last Of Us, The Last Of Us Remastered, The Last Of Us Remastered-Remastered and The Last Of Us Part 1. I’m the guy who is essentially purchasing the upcoming The Last Of Us special edition and experiencing it for the first time. I envy that person!
Therefore, I’m in no position to discuss prices since I’ve bought The Last Of Us 15 times. Somewhat ironically, it’s the PS5 Pro which has assisted my decision to buy a Switch 2. Again, how could I possibly complain about prices! Buyer’s remorse is an understatement.
No, it’s the diminishing returns which have helped persuade me. Having to watch John Linneman of Digital Foundry point out the differences zoomed in at 400% is never a good sign. It’s a sad state of affairs when even the tech nerds are disappointed. I digress. The proof is in the pudding.
I watched several hands-on previews of Switch 2 and I was impressed. I anticipated DLSS would be utilised since Nintendo uses a NVidia GPU. Nintendo now has the best AI upscaler and haven’t had to mess around developing something like PSSR. Mark Cerny must be sick.
I could harp on about how great Mario Kart World looks or how encouraging third party support is. Being able to play Zelda: Breath Of The Wild and Tears Of The Kingdom for the first time are also factors. Even the build quality of Switch 2 is much improved over its predecessor. ‘But it doesn’t have an OLED screen,’ cries somebody in the comments. Now I could wait for the inevitable upgrade, but I think I’ve been patient enough.
The real clincher for me, which many people are sleeping on, is the mouse controls. Being predominantly a PC gamer back in the day, the advantage for shooters can’t be understated. My only disappointment during the Direct was Call Of Duty: Warzone wasn’t confirmed. I have seen Metroid Prime 4 demonstrated using the mouse control, so I’m sold. Surely Nintendo will sell branded mouse mats? A food tray on my lap and a mouse mat should get the job done.
What really impressed me about the Joy-Con is you just tilt it and it goes into mouse control mode. How cool is that! Nintendo are really good at that kind of innovation. That’s Nintendo magic, right? It’s been a while, so forgive me if my terminology is misplaced.
It’s almost been an act of self-flagellation to deprive myself of Nintendo for so many years. But I look at it with a positive spin. I’m not burdened with buying remasters or upgrades of games I already own. They might get me with some N64 remakes, but other than that, it’s a clean slate for me. Until Switch 3, at least. Once I’m in the Nintendo cult, they’ve got me.
Whilst I agree with some of the complaints Nintendo is guilty of some egregious nickel and diming. The Switch 2 Welcome Tour game not being included almost seems like trolling. That being said, Nintendo showed me something I didn’t know I wanted. I don’t think I’ve been this pumped for a new console launch in a long time.
To help justify my unplanned purchase, I intend to sell my PS5 Pro and revert to a PS5 Slim. So there’s your headline, GC: ‘Ex-Nintendo fan sells PS5 Pro to buy Switch 2’. All said, hopefully Switch 2 is a shot in the arm the industry needs.
For those of you who can’t get past £75/$80 games. That’s perfectly fine, watch The Last Of Us season 2 instead.

GamingGAME’s head office is in the process of being shut down, as it auctions off GTA posters and pirate ship displays.
GAME’s presence on the UK high street has been in decline over the past few years, with the majority of stores now housed within other Frasers Group-owned shops like Sports Direct.
The high street chain has slimmed down its services as part of this transition – with stores no longer selling pre-owned games or offering reward points. For the Switch 2 launch, there will be no in-store pre-orders at all, and reportedly only a ‘small allocation’ through its website.
The bones of GAME are now being picked apart from what was once its beating heart, as the retailer’s headquarters in Basingstoke is shut down and auctioned off.
As shown in a listing on bidding site NCM Auctions, office equipment, storage units, and warehouse items are being sold off from GAME’s Basingstoke headquarters, which has been the company’s HQ for over two decades. ‘Clearance on behalf of GAME warehouse – due to closure,’ the listing reads.
While the majority of the items are fairly dull, there are some oddities, like a pirate ship display from Beanie Babies’ maker TY and a GTA: San Andreas wall poster, which is currently going for £45.
If you’re a collector, there are some branded display cases which might be useful if you’re looking to showcase your gaming wares, priced at £20-£30. Alternatively, you can buy a vending machine or some trolleys.
The downside is you have to collect these items from Basingstoke, and be available from 23-25 April. You can also view the items via an appointment on Wednesday April 16 if you want to take a look beforehand, with all bids closing on April 17.
As reported by Eurogamer, staff at GAME have said in-store pre-orders will now no longer be offered on any item, despite a post on their website stating otherwise.
While GAME continues to fall apart, the UK’s biggest retailer in second-hand games, CeX, has recently expanded its operations to delivery app JustEat.

FilmKylie Jenner apparently doesn’t want her boyfriend Timothee Chalamet acting in sex scenes – and I think she’s right.
While I don’t condone one partner telling another what to do with their career, I do support her plea for no more sex scenes.
Because, in my opinion, them being so commonplace is boring, problematic, and often adds very little to a film or TV show.
It was reported that Kylie expressed discomfort when it comes to her boyfriend’s intimate acting after his Marty Supreme co-star Gwyneth Paltrow emphasised how many sex scenes there are in the upcoming movie.
It’s since been rumoured that Kylie has asked her beau not to film any more.
I think a simple solution to mine and Kylie’s problems (although I do stress she has no right to tell Chalamet what to do) would be to give these clips the boot entirely.
This might sound prudish, and don’t get me wrong, I was just as enthralled by Bridgerton’s raunchy plot in 2020 as the next person, but something has shifted over time.
Watching actors strip off and simulate sex on screen – especially when it’s totally arbitrary – feels a bit like a hangover from a different time, and a little bit seedy and lazy.
And I’m talking all sex scenes – clothed, partially covered, and full frontal nudity. Why are they necessary?
One that always sticks out at me as being entirely redundant is that between Harry Styles and Florence Pugh, moments into Don’t Worry Darling.
Both fully clothed, Styles simulates oral sex on Pugh (so really it’s just him moving his head around between her thighs while she writhed around on a table), and I still don’t know for what reason.
The scene is supposed to highlight how in love the couple is at the start of the film, but to me it felt gratuitous and placed simply to excite the popstar’s fanbase with the chance to see the heartthrob in the throes of passion.
Anyone But You is another example of a unwanted romp, this time between Hollywood heartthrobs Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney.
The moment was supposed to highlight a change in their characters’ feelings for one another as their fake relationship developed into something real, but their steamy shower scene just felt like a way to get the actors in the buff because Powell and Sweeney are both considered desirable to audiences, and sex sells.
I think there were a number of intimate and sweet moments within Anyone But You that showed intimacy between the main characters in a far better way (for example when she burns her tongue and he blows on it, weird but it works) and showing the couple waking up in bed together would have done the same narrative job as the sex scene.
The more gratuitous snippets just feel like cop outs from producers who want to spice up their films and sell their movies, but with no tangible reasoning.
There are far more creative ways to show attraction and longing in cinema, which is why some of the most romantic moments have nothing to do with sex.
In 2005, Matthew Macfadyen’s Mr Darcy’s hand flex after helping Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Bennett out of a carriage had the world in a chokehold. To be honest, 20 years later, it still does.
The scene is considered immeasurably romantic and shows so much more longing, confusion, and conflicting emotions than a sex scene has since.
The same goes for the moment Peeta touches Katniss’s plait in The Hunger Games as they count down to eating poison. That small gesture showed a lot more desire and intimacy than many of the intimate scenes on screen on a daily basis.
‘But sex scenes aren’t just about love,’ I hear you cry.
And of course, you’re right. But I would still argue that you don’t need to show a pair in the act to get across desire, lust, tension, or whatever other emotion.
Showing Barry Keoghan slurp Jacob Elordi’s semen filled bathtub water in Saltburn had a far greater impact than a sex scene ever could.
The writers could have easily filmed a sex scene between the pair and had it play out as a fantasy of Keoghan’s character, but they chose to show his longing to consume Elordi’s character in a much cleverer way.
Making his character basically neck on with the drain hole made for much more compelling viewing in my humble opinion.
Even in the raunchy film Babygirl, fans were mostly left talking about Nicole Kidman drinking a glass of milk in the movie, arguably the least ‘sexy’ part of the film.
The moment managed to highlight her character’s willingness to be sexually dominated, without the scene requiring actual sex.
This isn’t to say that films about sex don’t have a purpose, and can be moving, important pieces of art.
Good Luck To You, Leo Grande, is a movie about sex and self-discovery that handles intimacy and sexual scenes perfectly.
Nothing about it felt gratuitous or exploitative, and the film used these intimate scenes to share a compelling story about love and loss.
Similarly, the new series Dying For Sex on Disney portrays various sex scenes and shows how important sex is for the main character’s journey of self-discovery.
None of the intimate scenes are superfluous, and all of them are perfectly utilised to tell a story.
What I am fed up with is sex scenes just for the sake of sex scenes. Sex scenes as a result of lazy filmmaking and a lack of creativity.

If people want to watch pornography, they can do so incredibly easily. I think cinema should be making use of every storytelling tool in their arsenal and finding a way to portray the same level of intimacy on screen that’s original and exciting.
Sex scenes were once considered scandalous or artistic, but wedging one into a film to appeal to audiences who want to gawp at a hot actor just doesn’t really sit well with me anymore.
I’m not going to stop watching films or TV shows with sex scenes or shield my eyes when they come on, but I’d love to see something more than simulated sex on screen – give me a hand flex any day.
And like Kylie Jenner, I don’t want to see Timothee Chalamet in the act.

A deal on Argos offers a discount across all Nintendo Switch 2 accessories and games, including Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza.
The high price for Mario Kart World may have caught everyone off-guard, but a new promotion can help reduce some of the financial damage.
If you sign up to receive marketing emails at UK retailer Argos before Wednesday, June 18, you’ll be sent a voucher code which will give you £10 off any order of at least £60.
While this offer applies to anything from Argos, it is a perfect way to reduce the price of physical Switch 2 games like Mario Kart World (£74.99) and Donkey Kong Bananza (£64.99), or accessories like the Switch 2 Pro Controller (£74.99).
There are some caveats to this deal. You’ll have 12 days to use the code once generated (they are usually sent within 15 minutes of signing up), and you have to pay £1.95 for delivery, as Argos only offers free delivery on orders over £100. In other words, you’ll technically save £8.05 overall, but it’s still something.
Unfortunately, you can’t get around this hiccup by stacking up orders, as Argos will apply the £1.95 charge to each item and deliver them separately.
It’s likely you could dodge it by using the free store collection option after the Switch 2 launches on June 5, but as you can only pre-order items at this stage, that option is currently unavailable.
On the upside, you can get several codes if you have unused email addresses going spare. You can only apply one code per item, but if you’re picking up Mario Kart World and the Switch 2 Edition of The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom, for example, you can save £8.05 on both.
You could use this offer on a Switch 2 console too, but Argos is currently sold out on those, and it’s unclear when the retailer will be restocked.
Once you’ve claimed the offer, you can stop receiving marketing emails by clicking on the ‘Unsubscribe from Argos Emails’ link at the bottom of the email voucher.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch in two bundles, with the console alone priced at £395.99 and a Mario Kart World bundle costing £429.99. You can check out the latest information on where to pre-order here.

MusicLast night, NYC’s LGBT Community Center held its annual Center Dinner at Cipriani Wall Street, celebrating the Center’s continued service to the local and global queer community. This year’s Dinner honored Susie Scher, Senior Advisor in the Financing Group within Global Banking & Markets at Goldman Sachs; Ruth Jacks, Executive Vice President and Head of Diverse Segments, Commercial Banking at Wells Fargo & Company; and global superstar (and recent PAPER cover star!) Kesha .
Since opening its doors in 1983 as a direct result of the AIDS crisis, The Center has provided an ever-growing list of life-affirming and life-saving services to LGBTQ people in New York City and beyond. These services, many of which are provided both in-person and virtually, include support groups, recovery programs, advocacy, community organizing and arts events.
Kesha was presented with the Visionary Award by Bob The Drag Queen, who introduced Kesha as “an artist who has not only shaped the music industry, but has also been a beacon of empowerment and authenticity for the queer community.” Kesha, stunning in a pink skin-tight dress, reminded the audience to “be fucking radical.”
“What we live through makes us stronger and gives us empathy for the person sitting next to us,” Kesha said. “In the midst of all of this hate and chaos, and people trying to take away our freedoms, The most political thing we can do is love ourselves and love one another.”
Read the full text of Kesha’s Visionary Award acceptance speech below:
Thank you and hello New York! I’m here in New York to do promo for my new album. It’s called “.”
I am releasing PERIOD as the CEO of my own record label Kesha Records, and all of these songs have been produced by me, written by me, sang by me and it’s the first time in my life, I have legal rights to the recordings of my voice, so I am so excited to be here this week.
As I’ve been here doing interviews and strutting around the city, I wanted to walk into this album cycle being a completely empowered, fully healed, and unbothered cunt, but the truth of it is that I have seen some shit and I’ve been through some shit. And whether I like it or not, it has changed me. And I can imagine that every person in this room has seen some shit and been through some shit that has changed you. Shit that you did not ask to go through. We are just people fighting for our lives to just be ourselves. To be safe. To be free. You are my community and this is my safe space to be authentically myself so I’m gonna be authentically myself tonight. Messy, still healing, pretty cunty most of the time, except for when I get wildly insecure or scared.
And it’s hard not to be scared in these times, when we are faced every day with an administration that is challenging our basic human rights and human freedoms. Although I don’t have the answers on how to combat every piece of this, I will say one thing with conviction.
What we live through, makes us stronger and gives us empathy for the person sitting next to us. In the midst of all of this hate and chaos, and people trying to take away our freedoms, The most political thing we can do is love ourselves and love one another. So let’s be fucking radical.
I love all of you so much thank you for being my home and thank you for having me as part of your beautiful community. I don’t know where I would be without this community and I will fight for each and every one of your rights the same way you have fought and stood up for mine for the rest of my life. Thank you for this honor.

GTA 6 – maybe Take-Two will accidentally leak its release date (Rockstar Games) Take-Two has accidentally revealed the release date of Mafia: The Old Country and in so doing has helped to narrow down the GTA 6 release date. Although no one will admit it […]
GamingTake-Two has accidentally revealed the release date of Mafia: The Old Country and in so doing has helped to narrow down the GTA 6 release date.
Although no one will admit it outright, other publishers are terrified of GTA 6 and the effect it’ll have on game sales of other titles this year.
The Switch 2 releasing in June, which is very unusual for a new console, is likely Nintendo wanting to avoid any crossover – since GTA 6 is going to eat up every bit of mainstream games coverage once it comes out. There’s also reports that several big name games will be delayed depending on when exactly GTA 6 is released.
It’s assumed it will launch this autumn, but Rockstar Games owner Take-Two has said they’re leaving the second trailer, which will likely reveal the release date, to as late as possible.
The only way to guess at when it might launch is to consider what other games Take-Two have out this year, since obviously they won’t want to cannibalise their own sales.
Borderlands 4 is out on September 23, but it’s been impossible to say whether that will be before or after GTA 6 (although one can assume it’s not within at least two weeks of it either side).
But now we know when Take-Two’s Mafia: The Old Country will be out, thanks to an accidental reveal on the game’s Steam page.
The fact that the information was quickly removed suggests that not only was it true, but it wasn’t supposed to be known at this time, with Insider Gaming reporting that the original text said: ‘Mafia: The Old Country is available August 8, 2025. Pre-order now for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam, and stay tuned to the official Mafia website for more information.’
Unlike Borderlands 4, The Old Country does have some thematic and gameplay similarities with GTA 6, so you would think Take-Two would want to be extra sure the two don’t come out anywhere close to each other.
A GTA 6 release before August 8 seems very unlikely, so this new information suggests it’s either the mid-point between The Old Country and Borderlands 4, i.e. somewhere around early September, or at least two weeks after September 23.
Based on previous Rockstar Game releases, an October launch does seem the most likely but this leak suggests that early September is the absolute earliest you could hope for.
What that will mean for other games is unclear and it’s going to be very interesting to see whether yearly sequels like EA Sports FC and Call Of Duty also try and get out of the game’s way.
Currently, there aren’t many other big name games scheduled for the autumn but smaller titles like Hell Is Us and Directive 8020 may well decide to get out of the way once GTA 6’s release date is finally confirmed.

GamingThe Switch 2 Pro Controller and Joy-Cons don’t have analogue shoulder buttons, but Nintendo was going to add them until someone stopped them.
Although the Nintendo Switch 2 and its Pro Controller are broadly similar to the original Switch, in terms of design and function, there are some important differences. The Switch 2 is bigger, it has its new ‘C’ button for online chat, and the Joy-Cons can turn into mice.
The Pro Controller has an audio jack and two new, programmable buttons at the back but what it doesn’t have, which has upset some fans, is analogue shoulder buttons.
Although Nintendo pioneered the idea of analogue controls, with the N64, it’s never used them for any of its shoulder buttons – the closest it’s got being the GameCube’s weird clutch-like set-up. All PlayStation 5 and Xbox controllers have analogue triggers, as they’re very useful for driving games, and Nintendo has revealed that it was considering them for the Switch 2.
The Switch 2’s designers were asked why they didn’t add analogue shoulder buttons to the Pro Controller or the new Joy-Cons, and the reason is straightforward but relatively surprising.
Technical director Tetsuya Sasaki answered that, ‘From the hardware side, we worked on what we were asked to do. There were a lot of, let’s say, very fussy developers around us who wanted to go this route. That’s why we went the route we did.’
‘In terms of analogue buttons on the shoulders, there are positives, but also negatives,’ producer Kouichi Kawamoto told VentureBeat.
‘You lose a little bit of instancy when they’re analogue. We considered it and decided that instant input would be the better option. That’s why we decided to move forward with this decision.’
They don’t specify which developers asked them to stick with digital shoulder buttons, but the implication seems to be that it was internal, first party developers.
Third party developers would probably prefer that the Switch 2 had analogue triggers, as that makes it easier to port games across, without having to make any changes to the controls.
Although Mario Kart World is the Switch 2’s main launch title, Nintendo doesn’t go in much for serious racing games, although it does have things like the Excite Bike series, which are relatively realistic.
It’s hard to say which third party racer might be the most likely to appear on Switch 2 but Forza Horizon 5 does seem one possibility, as it’s shortly to be released on PlayStation 5.
Strangely though, Microsoft is still yet to announce any games for the Switch 2, despite support for Nintendo platforms being a key argument for why it should be allowed to buy Activision Blizzard.
Whether that was solely hot air to convince monopoly investigators, or they have some sort of big unveil event planned is unclear.
Switch 2 games may feature at the recently announced summer showcase but despite it being the cornerstone of their new business plan, Microsoft has proven very reticent about announcing multiformat plans in public and has tended to do so only via blog plots and trailer drops.

FilmThe Oscars have added a new category for stunt design for the 100th Academy Awards, and fans believe Tom Cruise should receive an honorary award for his stuntwork.
There have long been calls to recognise stunts officially at the prestigious award ceremony, which began in 1929.
From 2027, the Academy Awards will introduce a Best Stunt Design category, shining a light on the designers of movie stunts.
Announcing the news, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and president Janet Yan said in a joint statement: ‘Since the early days of cinema, stunt design has been an integral part of filmmaking.
‘We are proud to honour the innovative work of these technical and creative artists, and we congratulate them for their commitment and dedication in reaching this momentous occasion.’
Stuntman David Leitch, who began his career as a stunt double for Brad Pitt, gave numerous presentations to the Academy about including a category for stunts alongside stunt coordinator and designer Chris O’Hara.
Reacting to the news, Leitch said: ‘This has been a long journey for so many of us.’
Only two stunt performers have ever been recognised at the Oscars – Hal Needham in 2012, and before that, Yakima Canutt in 1966.
Cruise, who is renowned for performing his own stunts even at the age of 62, has had fans rallying for him online to receive a gong for his decades of stunts.
It has been reported Cruise has been doing his own stunts since the 1990s, with the first Mission: Impossible film kickstarting it all.
He famously performed the vault heist at the CIA Langley facility, which saw him suspended above the floor, as well as the jaw-dropping exploding aquarium scene.
Across seven Mission: Impossible films, two Top Gun films, two Jack Reacher films, and The Mummy in 2017, the acclaimed actor has performed his own death-defying stunts.
Ben Everard posted: ‘Give Tom Cruise the first honorary stunt Oscar. Lifetime achievement.’
Josh Blumenkranz agreed, writing: ‘I just want Tom Cruise to get his honorary Oscar. The man is the king of stunts and should have been the first person to get it. But finally they added the category!!!’
As it happens, Cruise has never won an Oscar, but has been nominated four times across his career including Best Picture for Top Gun: Maverick.
‘They really don’t want Tom Cruise to win an Oscar. If there’s a category he would’ve been nailed on to win is the Stunt category, now they add it after the Mission Impossible films end !!,’ Snackbytes wrote, pointing out that the final Mission: Impossible film will be released on May 21, 2025.
Travis Glover added: ‘They should give Tom Cruise and the whole Mission: Impossible stunt team an Honorary Oscar for their contributions to stunt community.’
The upcoming Mission: Impossible film – The Final Reckoning – also sees the actor at his daredevil best, despite now being in his 60s.
These stunts are high risk, high reward, as it was reported last year that they had earned the actor a $600 million net worth.
The most recent Mission: Impossible film saw Cruise take part in what has been described as ‘the biggest stunt in cinema history’ where he literally drove off a cliff on a motorbike.
For it, an enormous ramp was constructed after months of training for a sequence that lasted all of five minutes, proving how much effort goes into the moments we see on the big screen.
Speaking about the stunt, he said, ‘You train and drill every little last act, over and over and over and over again,’ having done over 30 jumps per day and over 500 skydives in total.
His career hasn’t been without injury, however, with the actor breaking his ankle while filming Mission: Impossible – Fallout during a scene in which he jumped across high-rise building roofs.
During an appearance on the Graham Norton Show, he detailed how one jump saw him miss the mark: ‘I knew instantly my ankle was broken, and I really didn’t want to do it again, so I just got up and carried on with the take. I said, “It’s broken. That’s a wrap. Take me to hospital”, and then everyone got on the phone and made their vacation arrangements.’
He also broke two ribs during the filming of Mission: Impossible 3 in a scene where fighter jets bomb the Chesapeake Bay Bridge while his character Ethan Hunt is on it.
With so much danger and hard work that goes into the art of stunt performing, it’s no wonder the news that the Academy is finally recognising stunts in the Oscars has been met with celebration.
Director Paul Feig wrote on X: ‘Thank you @TheAcademy for finally recognizing the amazing work and contributions of the stunt community.
‘They are the unsung heroes of our industry and deserve all the recognition they can get. To all my stunt friends, you are the best. Congrats!!!’
Indian filmmaker S. S. Rajamouli said: ‘At last!! After a 100-year wait!!! Ecstatic for the new Oscars stunt design category for the films releasing in 2027!
‘Huge thanks to David Leitch, Chris O’Hara, and the stunt community for making this historic recognition possible, and to @TheAcademy, CEO Bill Kramer, and President Janet Yang for honoring the power of stunt work. Thrilled to see #RRRMovie’s action visuals shining in the announcement!’

FilmChristopher Landon has revealed to Metro that directing Drop was ‘cathartic’ for him following horrific online abuse during the controversy around Scream 7.
Starring The White Lotus actress Meghann Fahy and It Ends With Us actor Brandon Sklenar, Drop is a new thriller that takes place on a first date that goes horribly wrong.
The film sees Violet (Fahy) threatened via digidrop (think AirDrop) to murder her date Henry (Sklenar) or else her son will be murdered in a home invasion, which she can witness on her home CCTV on her phone.
The high-stakes thriller seems completely unfathomable, but for the director, he revealed that be threatened by an invisible force was sadly something he could relate to.
Landon was appointed the director of Scream 7 in 2023 and described the job as a dream, but quickly things turned sour as Melissa Barrera was reportedly fired from her lead role as Sam Carpenter over comments she made about Israel’s war with Hamas on social media.
Jenna Ortega, who played her sister, Tara, walked off the project soon after, and after receiving huge amounts of online abuse, Landon also stepped away from the project.

Despite the horrific abuse he endured, the director has revealed that Drop was a ‘cathartic’ experience for him that helped him channel what he went through.
Addressing the controversy that led to his departure from Scream 7 he told Metro: ‘I’ve said to people that the movie met the moment for me. I was feeling a lot of things about that [situation], and I really related to Violet’s predicament.’
‘You know, really feeling like you’ve got this person who is attacking you, and you can’t, you can’t see them, you can’t really speak directly to them.
‘And that was certainly something that I was feeling at the time.
‘So this was a really cathartic way to deal with some of that stuff.’
Speaking to Vanity Fair, he detailed the extent of the online abuse and revealed it was why he eventually stepped away from directing the film.
‘People were threatening to kill me and my family, to the point where the FBI was getting involved,’ he said. ‘I got messages saying, “I’m going to find your kids, and I’m going to kill them because you support child murder.”
Landon and his husband of nine years, Cody Morris, have two sons aged five and eight.
‘The head of security at various studios and the FBI had to examine the threats. It was highly aggressive and really scary.’
The script was written by Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach. Landon revealed to Metro that he joined the project after being completely hooked by the high-octane story.
‘I chewed my fingernails off reading the script. I loved the concept, I loved the characters, I loved the opportunity. I felt like it was a sort of modern Hitchcock kind of movie. And I loved the themes.’
The film tackles themes of domestic violence and abuse, with Violet learning to overcome a horrific past relationship where she and her son were held at gunpoint. Landon explained he felt films are a good vehicle to deliver important messages.
‘It’s a really difficult subject to talk about and to touch on in a film but also something that’s really close to me. I’ve had people very dear to me go through similar situations, and so I really wanted to approach it from a place of honesty.
‘And to push this message that so many survivors of domestic abuse are the most resilient people on Earth, and there is hope, and that’s really what the message of the movie ultimately is.’
He added: ‘I think it’s a great message for audience members, it’s a good way to talk about the subject.’
The Happy Death Day director explained that while he always aims to make films that are entertaining, powerful messages are often at the heart of the narrative.
‘I’m always trying to, like, Trojan horse, kind of heavy themes, but then they’re disguised in very entertaining movies. For me, that’s the best way to reach the biggest group of people as possible.’
The film focuses on the weaponisation of technology to cause harm, something that has been highlighted in other popular films and TV shows, and is only causes more anxiety as technology progresses.
‘I think Black Mirror is a show that’s really spoken to our collective cultural anxiety over technology.
‘I think we all feel it, and we all have these experiences where this thing that was designed for our convenience can still be used against us. And I think it’s a really relatable thing.
‘It doesn’t matter what the technology is, the threat is never the technology. The threat is people.
‘There’s always going to be a bad person who’s going to use that to harm someone else, or to use it to their advantage. And I think that’s what’s ultimately really scary to me, is that there are just really scary people out there who want to use this stuff to do bad things.’
Landon added that of course, Apple did not want them using AirDrop in this film, so they invented an app, ‘Digidrop,’ for the movie.
‘We had to create our own type of app and technology because it’s proprietary. A lot of these companies, they don’t want their product being used for nefarious purposes.’
He added that this was a source of anxiety for fears that fans wouldn’t understand the tech.
‘I was really nervous about that at the beginning, and then once we started showing the movie to people, they totally got it.’
Horror films have been a relatively safe bet for performing well at the box office, and Landon predicts that people are ready to ditch sequels and invest in original stories – and a good 90s-style thriller.
‘Right now we’re in this phase where it’s like everything is sort of IP-driven, or sequel or remake, and so it’s tough for an original movie.
‘Horror movies, luckily, have had a pretty good run theatrically, but I think thrillers kind of went out of fashion.
‘I kept telling everybody that I feel like the 90s thriller is coming back, and I think it needs to come back. That was certainly something that also inspired this movie.’
He added that he hopes the film is just the start of a resurgence of fun thrillers – something that he believes audiences are ‘jonesing for’.
‘With Drop, I’m really hoping that we’re at the front of a sort of thriller phase for cinemas. That would be amazing, because I do think people are jonesing for something that feels different.’
Drop is playing in cinemas now.

GamingAfter concerns at the price of Nintendo Switch 2 games, Sony has released a super expensive compilation for the two The Last Of Us titles.
Nintendo is always unpredictable, but few would’ve guessed that the main talking point to come out of last week’s Switch 2 Direct would be the cost of video games. The fact that Mario Kart World is £74.99 for the physical version and £66.99 when bought digitally is worrying for all kinds of reasons, not least the fact that other publishers might follow suit – or charge even more.
There are long-standing rumours that GTA 6 might cost £100 or more and that other publishers are egging on Take-Two so that they can charge a similar amount.
At the moment it’s impossible to know whether that’s true but it’s not very encouraging to find out that the newly announced The Last Of Us Complete, which was first rumoured back in March, costs £109.99 for a physical edition and £94.99 for the digital version – despite both games having been out for some time already.
The compilation contains remake The Last Of Us Part 1, which was originally released in 2022 for £69.99, and The Last Of Us Part 2 Remastered, which was released last January for £44.99 – or via a £10 upgrade if you own the PlayStation 4 version.
In theory, that means the Complete edition is slightly cheaper than buying the two games separately, except it’s very easy to get physical copies of both games at a considerable discount.
Just looking at Amazon today, The Last Of Us Part 1 is only £44.77 and The Last Of Us Part 2 Remastered is half price, if you have Prime, at £22.99. At GAME, Part 1 is a mere £34 and Part 2 only £34.
The games have seen discounts digitally as well, although naturally Sony has made sure they’re currently being sold at their original, full price.
There doesn’t seem to be any new content for the digital version but the physical edition, which is only available from PlayStation Direct, has a SteelBook case, four comic books, four lithographic art prints, and a thank you letter from director Neil Druckmann.
The digital version is available now and is obviously being released to tie in to the start of season 2 of The Last Of Us TV show, which begins this weekend.
Oddly, the physical edition won’t be out until July 10 though, after the season has finished.
Season 2 will not cover all the events of The Last Of Us Part 2, which is so long it will have to be split up into multiple seasons.
Druckmann has also warned that it will deviate more from the original story than season 1 did, so while playing the game will involve tons of spoilers, things won’t necessarily play out the same way in the show.
