TVBenidorm’s Solana Resort could be back in business after the show’s creator confirmed he has been in discussions over a reboot after rumours swirled.
The beloved comedy premiered on ITV in 2007, garnering an instant fanbase thanks to hysterical performances from the likes of Steve Pemberton, Siobhan Finneran, Janine Duvitski, Sheila Reid, Tim Healy, and Johnny Vegas.
It followed an ensemble cast playing holidaymakers and staff at the Solana all-inclusive hotel in Spain, where chaos ensued.
Benidorm ran for 10 series across 74 episodes, finishing in 2018 when the channel pulled the plug, with original cast members having departed and ratings dipping.
It had been previously claimed ITV is looking to bring it back – and now creator and writer Derren Litten has revealed there is truth to the speculation.
‘Have I been talking to ITV in the last few months? Yes I have,’ he teased on a Facebook live on Sunday, according to The Sun.
‘Have ITV commissioned a special or a series at the moment? No. Might they in the next few weeks, couple of months? Yeah they might. They might.
‘So I hope that gives you some hope, and I hope that gives you some idea of where we are.’
Earlier this month, the outlet claimed that meetings for a new series were underway.
A source said: ‘Benidorm was adored by millions when it was suddenly cancelled. Fans will be thrilled to hear ITV wants to bring it back.’
They added that there’s ‘major excitement’ already building as ‘early talks’ begin.
‘Producers have started to reach out to the show’s stars and are hopeful a decision can be made later this year.’
It comes after previous cast members have expressed their support for a revival. Sherrie Hewson (who played manageress Temple-Savage) said last year on Good Morning Britain: ‘Well, everybody in the world watches it now.’
As Benidorm continues to do numbers on Netflix, she added: ‘Everybody stops me in the street and says, “We just want it back.”
‘It would make a film, I think, and you could bring people from everywhere that had ever been on Benidorm, their stories back together.
‘I think it would be brilliant, and it would be two and a half hours as opposed to half an hour. ‘I think it would be very funny, so that’s what I’m up there for.’
Derren even addressed Sherrie’s comments on the Facebook live, saying: ‘Sherrie does this rumour every couple of years, and Sherrie says that the show is coming back, and she is not stirring, she is hopeful because she loves the show as much as I do.’
Indeed, the appetite for a Benidorm reboot is strong several years later, with X being sent into meltdown upon discovering it is a possibility and demanding the return of the OG cast.
The sitcom won numerous awards in its heyday, including an NTA, and was nominated for a Bafta.
Therefore, when it was cancelled, Derren wasn’t going quietly.
Picking up the best comedy TV Choice Award just two months after the show was scrapped, he said: ‘This is a bit awkward; the show’s just been cancelled.’
He added with a facetious tone: ‘I’ve huge respect for ITV—a show that’s getting five and a half million viewers and still picking up awards, but they’ve cancelled it. That takes balls.’
ITV originally cited the show having simply ‘run its course’ as the reason for tossing it on the scrap heap.
The network was reportedly ‘disappointed’ when series 10 premiered to 400,000 viewers less than the previous year, as 4.3million tuned in.
However, in recent years, it’s had somewhat of a resurgence thanks to all episodes being available on streaming platforms and clips going viral on TikTok.
A whole new generation has now been able to laugh at the antics of the Garvey family, plus Madge and Mel, and not to mention cameos from Cilla Black and Dame Joan Collins.
From Sheridan Smith to Hannah Waddingham, Benidorm featured a wide range of stars from start to finish, many of whom have gone on to enjoy careers at epic heights.
ITV has been contacted for comment.

A Celebrity Big Brother presenter has admited Mickey Rourke had housemates feeling ‘scared and vulnerable’ with him in the house.
Appearing on ITV’s This Morning on Monday for the gossip segment about the reality show, Will Best shared his take on the shocking events of the weekend, which resulted in The Wrestler actor’s departure.
Confessing that he doesn’t think the star, 72, is an ‘evil man’, he said, unfortunately, his unacceptable behaviour did leave the housemates feeling both ‘scared and vulnerable’.
Recapping why this was a common feeling amongst the housemates, the presenter said Rourke caused upset from the get-go, especially after using ‘unacceptable language and behaviour’ towards former Dance Moms star JoJo Siwa.
Best, 40, said following ‘further use of inappropriate language’ and ‘instances of unacceptable behaviour’, including using certain language towards The Only Way Is Essex star Ella Rae Wise, and ‘language and behaviour’ that ‘was threatening and aggressive’ towards Love Island star Chris Hughes, Rourke and Big Brother agreed it was time for him to leave.
While Best was cautious with his words, he told hosts Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond that the actor’s exit was not ‘something entirely unexpected, just because it’s an extreme environment’.

He continued to say that as Mickey is prone to ‘certain types of behaviour,’ there is always a danger’, but believes he isn’t an ‘evil man’.
One thing that did surprise the presenter, however, is how quickly Rourke crossed the line again.
Recalling the instance on Saturday night when Rourke and Hughes were dressed as pirates during a task, he discussed the actor’s ‘threatening’ behaviour, which was ‘totally out of proportion’.

‘I can’t repeat exactly what Mickey said, but it was bad, and it made not just Chris – Chris handled it very well – but it made the rest of the house feel vulnerable, a bit scared,’ Best said.
He added that ‘sadly’ the same day he made ‘totally inappropriate’ remarks to Wise that ‘made her feel understandably vulnerable, and that is the point where you’ve got to go.’
Maintaining his diplomatic approach in his summary of the events, Best told hosts that he ‘felt a bit sorry’ for the actor as he knows he has had a tough life, and he hopes that Rourke ‘will learn’ from his behaviour.
Upon leaving the house, Rourke shared his upset and admitted he had taken things too far.
‘I stepped over the line. And I take responsibility for doing the wrong thing,’ he said. ‘Because I lost my temper, and I’ve been trying to work on it my whole life and I wish I would have had better self-control and I’m very sorry.
‘I’m ashamed of myself for losing it for a few seconds there. Nobody got touched or hurt.
‘Maybe some feelings got hurt or maybe others have feelings about others getting upset but, you know, I’m sorry about that.’
It follows news that the star will miss out on his rumoured £500,000 fee for his behaviour.
While it’s claimed he will receive some compensation for his time and appearance on the hit show, it’s likely to be much less than what he originally agreed to.

‘Mickey won’t be receiving all his money from ITV,’ a source revealed this morning.
They continued to say that it’s standard protocol if a celebrity gets removed from the house, ‘they don’t get the full fee’.
‘It’s as simple as that and they will be discussing that with him. Mickey was ready to leave the house and it ended up feeling like a mutual decision between him and ITV in the end. It was getting too much,’ the source told The Sun.

TVCelebrity Big Brother star Tiffany Pollard is returning to the ITV reality show nearly a decade after pure TV gold moment, ‘David’s Dead.’
In 2016, Tiffany crumpled as her fellow housemate Angie Bowie whispered in her ear after being informed by producers of her ex-husband David Bowie’s death from cancer: ‘You can’t say a word, David’s dead.’
The Flavor of Love star collapsed on the floor and wailed in disbelief as she had mistakenly confused one of the most celebrated musicians of all time with housemate David Gest.
Now, Tiffany, 43, is poised to make her Celebrity Big Brother comeback tonight as a presenter on spin-off, Late and Live. Last week, 2024 winner David Potts did the honours, while Strictly star Oti Mabuse joined the show for the final seven days.
Each host has taken turns to assume the role of the Celebrity House Guest, promising hilarious discussions and deliberations alongside a star-studded panel of fellow celebrity guests on the TV show.
After ‘David’s dead’ went down in TV history, Tiffany cashed in on her fame by selling T-shirts with the slogan.

However, she pulled her new clothing line after Gest died just months later in a London hotel room after suffering a stroke aged 62.
In 2022, Tiffany claimed she was being haunted by Gest’s ghost as she unpacked the viral Celebrity Big Brother moment on Watch What Happens Live.
When asked if she ever rewatched the infamous episode by presenter Andy Cohen, and what exactly was going through her mind, she admitted that she hadn’t been able to tune in again.
‘David and I have not made up,’ she replied. ‘And I did not rewatch that episode but he does haunt my kitchen. Every once in a while…’
She added: ‘David, please stop coming into the kitchen and messing with the knives and forks. He’s mad at me.’
The second season of the ITV reboot of Celebrity Big Brother returned on Monday – and has already been explosive.
Last night, Hollywood actor Mickey Rourke, 72, was removed from the house after repeated warnings over inappropriate behaviour, particularly towards JoJo Siwa, 21.
However, he had survived the first public vote on Friday, with former Tory MP Michael Fabricant, 74, the first celebrity to be eliminated from the house.
Elsewhere, Celebrity Big Brother viewers are convinced producers are trying to hatch a ‘showmance’ between Love Island star Chris Hughes, 32, and Ella Rae Wise, 24.
On the launch episode, fans noticed that as soon as reality TV star Ella entered the famous house, the cameras panned to Chris, indicating hopes that the pair will find love.
Also in the Celebrity Big Brother house are Patsy Palmer, Chesney Hawkes, Donna Preston, Trisha Goddard, Angellica Bell, Danny Beard, Daley Thompson and Jack P Shepherd.
Tiffany shot to fame after the 00s US reality show Flavor of Love and starred in its spin-off series Love New York, which launched her career in TV.
Her subsequent roles included Brunch with Tiffany, Hot Haus, House of Villains and College Hill: Celebrity Edition.
Tiffany also hosted the Fenty Beauty holiday gift guide twice at the request of Rihanna.
In 2023, she was named one of Variety magazine’s most powerful women on reality TV.
Celebrity Big Brother: Late & Live is broadcast on ITV2 and ITVX from 10.30pm from Monday.

GamingNew pictures provide a better look at the Nintendo Switch 2’s user interface, and it looks like a minor upgrade over the original console.
The Nintendo Switch 2 might sport mouse functionality and vastly improved technical specifications, but the console itself is largely an iterative upgrade.
This is most clear in the system’s user interface, shown off during the Switch 2 Direct earlier this month, which is basically the same as the original console aside from some new icons for social features like GameChat and transferable Game-Key Cards.
Another part of the system’s interface has now been revealed via Nintendo’s website, and it’s another slightly conservative revamp.
The images in question show off the redesigned Switch Online app, which is accessible from the home menu and lets players view the retro game library, membership perks, and details of your subscription.
As you can see from the pictures, the presentation overall looks more appealing and tidier, but it isn’t a huge leap from the original app’s design.
The Switch 2 will still have the separate retro console apps, where you’ll actually be able to play games from the Game Boy, GameCube and others depending on your subscription, but those are expected to look the same.
GameCube games will be available for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers who own a Switch 2 when the console launches on June 5. The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker, SoulCalibur 2, and F-Zero GX will be playable at launch, with the likes of Super Mario Sunshine and Pokémon Colosseum set to arrive at a later date.
Unfortunately, the eShop on Switch 2 will not have any background music, but Nintendo has said it will run better than the Switch’s storefront.
Speaking to press about the eShop, Nintendo Switch 2 producer Kouchi Kawamoto, said: ‘I wanted to make sure that it was a smooth experience. That the scrolling of the list doesn’t stall, that it’s very smooth, pages load fast.’
The Switch 2 is set to launch with Mario Kart World, which has caused some commotion over its price.

As has become tradition, the last episode of WWE TV before the big show is WrestleMania SmackDown, which the company has billed almost as an extension of the event itself.
The event will air at 1am on Netflix in its usual slot.
Here’s what has been announced for WrestleMania SmackDown so far:
For UK fans, this year’s Hall of Fame ceremony will be broadcast live on WWE socials including X and YouTube from 4am BST.
This year, WWE is separating the ceremony from SmackDown and transforming the event back into its own standalone showcase honouring legends from the past.
The Hall of Fame is being held at the new Fontainebleau Las Vegas hotel on The Strip.
2025 Hall of Fame inductees:
NXT Stand and Deliver is back in its usual timeslot on WrestleMania Saturday, a few hours before night 1 gets underway.
For UK fans, the show starts at 6pm on Netflix with the full match card still being finalised.
WWE Stand and Deliver 2025 matches so far
WWE WrestleMania 41 night one will start at midnight live on Netflix on Saturday, April 19.
The card for the Show of Shows – which will be broadcast on the streaming giant for the first time ever – has pretty much been finalised, with only minor changes expected.
WrestleMania night 1 match card:
WWE WrestleMania 41 night two gets underway at midnight live on Netflix on Sunday, April 20.
Six matches have been confirmed so far, although it’s expected another one or two bouts will be added across both nights.
WrestleMania night 2 match card so far:
The Raw after WrestleMania has a reputation for being a spectacle in its own right, with some special moments saved for that show.
This year, the Raw after Mania airs at 1am on Netflix – but we won’t get an idea of what to expect until after this year’s WrestleMania.
John Cena has been advertised regardless of what happens between him and Cody Rhodes as the Hollywood star’s wrestling retirement tour continues.
Last year’s Raw after Mania featured a verbal joust between Cody and The Rock, Cena teaming with The Miz and R-Truth, and Raw debuts of Ilja Dragunov and Roxanne Perez.

Since being released, the show has soared into the most watched TV show list on Netflix UK, where it’s currently sitting at number 9.
It’s been acclaimed by both critics and audiences alike.
‘A mostly winning exploration of Inuit culture, the stressful limitations of life in a small town, and the heartbreaking intersection between who you are and who you want to be,’ RogerEbert.com wrote in its review.
‘A gorgeously shot, warm-hearted, but unafraid to be raunchy, Inuit-led comedy set in Nunavut with elements of magical realism and a Netflix-boosted budget,’ the Globe and Mail shared.
‘North of North is unassuming in its humour, only occasionally provoking full-on belly laughs or delivering memorably quotable lines. But I found, as I kept watching, that what was near-constant was the smile on my face,’ The Hollywood Reporter added.
Meanwhile fans called it ‘refreshing’, ‘touching’ and ‘heartfelt’.
Many have also already begged for a second season too.
North of North was filmed in Iqaluit, the real-life capital and most populous city of the Arctic Canadian territory of Nunavut., where Inuit co-creators Stacey Aglok-MacDonald and Alethea Arnaquq-Baril live.
Speaking to Time recently, the pair spoke about how their series stood apart from others with Indigenous characters.
‘A lot of us have been painted as these disappearing cultures, which is not true at all. And so a lot of Indigenous filmmakers are choosing humour. The vast majority of media about us has been done by others, and we’re breaking away from that tradition,’ Arnaquq-Baril said.
‘We wanted to make a show that felt real and true for the both of us and for Inuit everywhere. We want Inuit everywhere to feel seen and represented,’ she added when speaking to Netflix’s Tudum.
Meanwhile director Danis Goulet explained the push for authenticity.
‘Narrative sovereignty is the notion that Indigenous people deserve to be at the helm of our own stories. When we do that, we don’t just change what ends up on screen, but we actually change the way we endeavour to make the work as well.’
More than 500 locals serving as background actors in addition to the series’ 45 Canadian cast members.
It also stars Mary Lynn Rajskub as Helen, the town manager, Keira Cooper as Bun, Siaja’s daughter, Maika Harper as Neevee, Siaja’s mother who raised her on her own and Jay Ryan as environmental consultant Alistair.
North of North is streaming on Netflix.

GamingThere was a lot of fan demand for Call Of Duty: Warzone to bring back the Verdansk map and yet Activision could still take it away a second time.
Amid chatter of dwindling player counts and a possible shutdown, Call Of Duty: Warzone reintroduced its original map, Verdansk, as part of its season three update earlier this month.
Considering there have been fan demands for Verdansk to return to Warzone ever since it was removed in 2021 (with it even being nuked in-game and replaced with a new map), you’d think long-time players would be thrilled to see it back.
Apparently, that has been the case, with Verdansk’s return proving successful for publisher Activision. However, it doesn’t sound like its inclusion is guaranteed to be permanent.
IGN recently spoke with Warzone game director Pete Actipis and creative director Etienne Pouliot about how they approached bringing back Verdansk and how they felt about the response from players.
While there’s no way to check exact player numbers for Warzone, Call Of Duty’s overall player numbers on Steam did see a noticeable jump once season three began on April 3.
Beforehand, there were under 59,000 players, but that leapt up to almost 140,000 over the following weekend, according to SteamDB.
No doubt Verdansk’s return was a big part of that and Actipis and Pouliot were naturally asked if the map will remain a permanent inclusion this time or if this is just a one-off.
They kept their answer vague, but while fans shouldn’t worry about Verdansk suddenly vanishing any time soon, it doesn’t sound like there are plans to keep the map around forever.
‘We brought Verdansk back for a reason. It wasn’t just to bring it back for a season and kind of say goodbye to it again,’ explained Actipis, pointing out that a lot of work went into recreating the map.
As a reminder, Verdansk had to be rebuilt from the ground up and while it’s mostly a 1:1 recreation, some minor changes and quality-of-life additions were made.
‘So for the time being Verdansk is sticking around and this is just the beginning of the Verdansk 2025 journey, and then we’ll see how things go from there,’ continued Actipis, adding, ‘So again, no confirmation or anything on the strategy on the maps moving forward.’
At the very least, it seems Activision has more plans for Verdansk throughout the rest of the year, though Actipis and Pouliot naturally kept quiet about what those are.
As such, you can expect the map to stick around even after this year’s Call Of Duty game launches. No official information has been shared yet, but rumours say it’s surprisingly another Black Ops game despite Call Of Duty: Black Ops 6 only launching last year.

TVAfter months of speculation and rumour HBO has officially announced several stars set to join the Harry Potter reboot cast.
Six new cast members have been announced in total, including several who were already heavily rumoured to be joining the TV series.
John Lithgow has now been confirmed as Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore, after the American actor revealed the news himself in an interview.
The 79-year-old said that the role came as a ‘total surprise’ to him, adding that it was not an easy decision to accept the part ‘because it’s going to define me for the last chapter of my life’.
I May Destroy You star Paapa Essiedu, 34, was heavily rumoured to be playing Potions master Severus Snape, a rumour that has now turned out to be true.
On Instagram, Paapa said: An honour and a privilege to be going on this journey with these legends. We shall eat and we shall leave no crumbs.
‘See you at Hogwarts. Professor Snape x.’
Cho Chang actor Katie Leung commented: ‘There’s no one better.’
Nick Frost, 53, has also been confirmed to be starring as Rubeus Hagrid after the actor was speculated to have been cast as the beloved Hogwarts groundskeeper.
In addition to Lithgow, Essiedu and Frost, another new cast member joining as a series regular is Tumbleweeds actress Janet McTeer, 63, who’ll be stepping into the shoes of Head of Gryffindor House, Minerva McGonagall.
There are also two actors who are joining the TV series as guest and recurring cast members, the first of which is Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone who turns out to be hiding a dark secret.
The actor has been highly praised for his theatre performances, with Deadline writing of his stage work: ‘He’s unknown outside of the theatre world. But within it, he’s celebrated and adored, because he can, seemingly effortlessly, take on any role.’
The last of the actors announced for the show for the time being is Paul Whitehouse, 66, who’s going to be portraying Squib caretaker Argus Filch.
The Welsh actor and comedian has previously starred in programmes including The Fast Show, Harry & Paul and Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing.
In a statement, Harry Potter showrunner Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod, director of multiple episodes and an executive producer said they were ‘delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard,’ adding: ‘We can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life.’
There has been intense speculation about the new Harry Potter cast since the TV reboot was announced on April 12, 2023.
Several big-name actors were rumoured to be in contention for roles in the series which has been described as a ‘faithful adaptation of the beloved Harry Potter book series’.
At this point, the officially confirmed cast members set to star in the Harry Potter TV reboot are…
Mark Strong was supposedly up for the role of Dumbledore while Sharon Horgan and Brett Goldstein were considered for Minerva McGonagall and Hagrid.
Sadly, there’s no news about who’s playing He Who Shall not be Named, aka the dark Lord Voldemort although fans are convinced Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphy is set to wield the wand.
As for the golden trio – Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger – there hasn’t been any official news. However, 32,000 children are reported by the BBC to have auditioned for the role.
The news that Harry’s adventures are being adapted for television has been divisive. Some Harry Potter fans have expressed excitement at the idea of a more faithful adaptation of JK Rowling’s books, while others have been more sceptical, criticising the move as uncreative.
‘I am very, very excited for this,’ wrote @GolgothaD on X. ‘10 more years, and finally we can see it on screen, as close to the books as possible.’ @ShutUpBudgie was similarly enthusiastic writing, ‘No one is taking away the books. No one is taking away the movies. This is supposed to be faithful to the books with Rowling’s backing. Very excited!’
@KinoeCole, however, said he was ‘beyond disappointed’ with the news, before adding ‘no fans wanted Harry to be redone. Give us origins of Hogwarts, The Marauders, Tom Riddle, [Or the] Order of The Phoenix.’
A number of fans have also said they plan to boycott the TV series due to Rowling’s comments about the trans community. Rowling, 59, has been criticised by some fans for expressing views that have been described as transphobic by the LGBTQ+ community and civil rights groups.
Following the official announcement of the TV show the Wizarding News – a group dedicated to reporting the latest Harry Potter news – wrote on X that ‘any new Harry Potter TV show made with or by JK Rowling will be met with loud and constant protest’.
In a previous tweet, the group called for a boycott of the franchise for as long as Rowling was working with Warner Bros. Discovery.
Responding to the boycott plans, Rowling penned a scathing reply, writing on X: ‘Dreadful news, which I feel duty bound to share. Activists in my mentions are trying to organise yet another boycott of my work, this time of the Harry Potter TV show. As forewarned is forearmed, I’ve taken the precaution of laying in a large stock of champagne.’
Several members of the Harry Potter movie cast have been critical of Rowling’s views on trans people including Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, while others like Miriam Margolyes and Ralph Fiennes have defended her.
Regardless of Rowling’s politics, it’s clear HBO believes it’s onto a winner with the Harry Potter TV show.
It’s been reported that the series will span the course of a decade with each season adapting one book in the franchise.
The Harry Potter TV show will stream exclusively on Max

A ‘gnarly’ body horror film coming to cinemas has been compared to Ocsar-winning flick The Substance.
The Ugly Stepsister, directed by Emilie Blichfeldt, is a warped retelling of classic fairy tale Cinderella, from the perspective of one of the princess’s stepsisters.
Elvira (Lea Myren), is obsessed with winning the heart of Prince Julian (Isac Calmroth) and will stop at nothing to do so, even if it means subjecting herself to painful cosmetic procedures closer to medieval torture methods.
When it appears that her beautiful stepsister Agnes (Thea Sofie Loch Naess) is about to receive what she believes is fated to her, Elvira resorts to drastic – and gruesome – methods to make sure that doesn’t happen.
The Ugly Stepsister comes to US cinemas on April 18 and hits UK theatres a week later on April 25.
It holds a whopping 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with many critics detailing how ‘gorgeous’ yet ‘gory’ the Nordic horror film is.
In their review, Slashfilm wrote: ‘A movie as gorgeous as it is gruesome, complete with a few moments of gore that had a handful of people audibly fighting the urge to retch in the aisles.’
Slant Magazine added: ‘Emilie Blichfeldt knows the exact point of queasiness to which she can push an audience and gradually tests how much further she can move that mark with each successive scene.’
Autostraddle hailed The Ugly Stepsister ‘one of the best horror films of the decade’, while Mashable thought it was ‘savagely brutal and yet strangely beautiful.’
Many heaped praise on Elvira actor Lea Myren, describing her as ‘wonderfully expressive’ and ‘captivating’ in the lead role.
Variety said: ‘Contrasting how her female characters feel with the expectations men put on them, Blichfeldt makes clear that impossible beauty standards are the unfairest of them all, whether in the real world or this twisted fictional kingdom.’
Bloody Disgusting summarised: ‘Instead of whimsical romance set in the Renaissance, Blichfeldt gets graphic with the medieval torture women endure in their pursuit of happily ever after. It’s elegant, stylish, and gnarly.’
Polygon compared the film to Coralie Fargeat’s hit film The Substance, highlighting how The Ugly Stepsister uses unrealistic beauty standards as the catalyst for its horror.
Director Blichfeldt spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about how she decided to flip the script on Cinderella and tell the classic story from the stepsister’s perspective.
‘I’ve always been very fascinated by, and have empathized with, women who have trouble with their body image, and who are struggling to fit within femininity,’ she said.
‘In my previous work, I’ve tried to show these characters, where you can empathize with them, but also see them as beautiful, to really challenge the ideas of what is beauty, and what does it do to us to have these struggles.’
She continued: ‘I’ve taken the liberty to combine different versions of Cinderella. The Brothers Grimm one describes the sisters as beautiful on the outside and ugly on the inside, which I still think is very interesting. Then there’s the Charles Perrault version, the French one, which Disney drew from.
‘Disney added the idea of linking beauty and kindness on one side and physical and inner ugliness on the other. You had that in fairy tales before, with witches and their big noses, but Disney really makes it obvious.’
The Ugly Stepsister is released in US cinemas on April 18 and UK cinemas on April 25.

TVMickey Rourke lasted just six days in the Celebrity Big Brother house – he was thrown out after numerous rule-breaking incidents.
The American actor and former boxer, 72, was pulled up by the ITV series for using inappropriate language and exhibiting unacceptable behaviour.
Politician Michael Fabricant was the first of this year’s line-up to be evicted on day five, even after Mickey had sparked a backlash before entering the house.
Following a ‘creepy’ interaction with host AJ Odudu, Mickey then got into trouble for behaving in a threatening manner towards Love Island’s Chris Hughes during a task. as well as using ‘sexually inappropriate language’ towards The Only Way Is Essex star Ella Rae Wise.
He was previously reprimanded by Big Brother for making homophobic comments towards 21-year-old singer and actress JoJo Siwa.
In a statement regarding Mickey’s departure, a spokesperson for the show said: ‘Mickey Rourke has agreed to leave the Celebrity Big Brother house this evening following a discussion with Big Brother regarding further use of inappropriate language and instances of unacceptable behaviour.’
When Big Brother told Mickey that this wasn’t the first time his ‘offensive and inappropriate language’ had been highlighted, he responded in the Diary Room: ‘I did wrong. I apologise. I’m sorry. I can’t take it back, you know? I stepped over the line. And I take responsibility for doing the wrong thing.’

Mickey was ejected from the Celebrity Big Brother house on day six of the 2025 edition of the competition after several warnings from Big Brother.
ITV released a statement saying that Mickey had used ‘inappropriate sexual language’ towards Ella Rae, 24, in addition to referencing ‘instances of aggressive behaviour towards housemate Chris Hughes’.
Ella Rae was left in tears by the incident, which was shown on Sunday’s episode and took place during a task Big Brother had assigned the housemates.
She told a group, including Mickey: ‘I have instructions for us all. We’re not allowed in the bedroom, no one is allowed to touch the crisps or sweets.’

Gesturing towards Mickey, Ella Rae said, ‘You’ve got to come with me,’ before Mickey responded by saying ‘Come in you’.
The comment shocked RuPaul’s Drag Race UK star Danny Beard, 32, who immediately jumped to Ella Rae’s defence, saying, ‘Mickey, you can’t make them jokes!’
Mickey’s incident with Ella came after he’d already told housemate JoJo Siwa, who’s gay and in a relationship: ‘If I stay [in the Big Brother house] longer than four days, you won’t be gay anymore.’
As well as his comments towards Ella Rae, Mickey was also ejected from the Big Brother house after an ‘aggressive’ incident that involved Love Island star Chris Hughes.
Over the weekend, the CBB house was transformed for a pirate-themed shopping task. As all housemates gathered in the garden, with JoJo assigned the role of Captain and put in charge of steering the ship.
The incident began with the internet star saying, ‘Ahoy! How have things been going out here?’ before talk show star Trisha Goddard responded: ‘There is a rat amongst us, Captain.’
Chris stepped out of line and looked at Mickey, as if to suggest he was the rat. The former boxer then stepped forward to confront the reality TV star.

‘You looking at me?’, Mickey said to Chris, ignoring JoJo’s attempts to stay in character and calm the situation down. Mickey then said to Chris: ‘Don’t eyeball me.’
‘Mickey, it was a joke, f***ing…’, Chris started to say, before being cut off by Mickey who repeated his previous request, but more aggressively: ‘Don’t f***ing eyeball me, you c**t.’
Mickey was one of the biggest names to enter the Celebrity Big Brother house this year, and his rumoured pay packet appeared to reflect that.
The actor, who has a Golden Globe and a Bafta to his name, was reportedly set to receive around £500,000 for his stint on the competition.
However, plans may have now changed due to the nature of his exit, following the string of incidents that ultimately saw him ejected rather than evicted by the public.
While it’s claimed he will receive some compensation for his time and appearance on the hit show, it’s likely to be much less than what he originally agreed to.
‘Mickey won’t be receiving all his money from ITV,’ a source revealed, saying it’s standard protocol that if a celebrity gets removed from the house, ‘they don’t get the full fee’.
‘It’s as simple as that and they will be discussing that with him. Mickey was ready to leave the house and it ended up feeling like a mutual decision between him and ITV in the end. It was getting too much,’ the source told The Sun.
Watch Celebrity Big Brother on ITV at 9pm weeknights, and on ITVX.
